Sarah Freeman picks her daughter Capri, 8, up at Thetford Elementary on Lady Mule on Tuesday, March 22, 2022. The family lives on Houghton Hill, one of the roads in town that is closed due to the mud. Capri got to school in the morning on Lady Mule as well. Freeman's older daughter rode her horse to school as well and did so last year simply to do so. (Valley News - Jennifer Hauck) Copyright Valley News. Valley News photo editor Geoff Hansen teases me often that I submit too many photographs from Thetford.

My excuse: I live in Thetford, so every day I’m going to pass through my town at least twice. Stands to reason I will have more images from there as a result.

Such was the case in spring when while driving to work I spotted a white mule surrounded by a gaggle of children on Thetford Hill.

Mud season this year was, well, epic, with so many roads left impassable. Sarah Freeman had just dropped her daughter off at Thetford Elementary. Students from Open Fields School were petting Freeman’s mule, named Lady Mule.

After talking with Freeman a bit I learned her road was closed due to the mud so she was bringing her daughter to school atop a mule.

She would be returning with Lady Mule to pick up her daughter, Capri, in the afternoon. I went back to the school in the afternoon to wait for pick up to capture a photo for the newspaper.

The Freemans and Lady Mule are a wonderful reminder of the resourcefulness of our rural lives.
