BURLINGTON — It’s been more than three months since the Vermont and New Hampshire high school hockey championships were decided, but top seniors from both states were back on the ice Saturday for the annual Make-A-Wish All-Star Hockey Classic at the University of Vermont’s Gutterson Fieldhouse.

A total of 14 Upper Valley athletes participated as the states split the two contests, with the Vermont girls’ team going ahead late for a 2-1 victory and the New Hampshire boys winning a back-and-forth, 5-3 contest.

The Hanover girls, who won the NHIAA title, had six players on New Hampshire’s 16-member roster — forwards Greta Schutz, Gail Morse and Kaye Lindsay, defenders Lily Seelig and Danielle Rudd and goaltender Katie Smith.

But the two representatives from Lebanon-Stevens-Kearsarge were perhaps the best players for the Granite State in their team’s narrow defeat.

Schutz fired a shot late in the first period, and the Raiders’ Lilly Gogan, crashing the net, deflected it in for the game’s first goal. Gogan was named her team’s MVP after the game, although LSK goaltender Paige Hoegler, despite allowing the game-winning goal, was nearly as valuable. Hoegler made 15 saves in the third period, several of which came on the game’s only penalty. Vermont put 41 shots on goal in the game to New Hampshire’s 14.

The all-star teams had two practices on Friday and one more before the games on Saturday, but prior to that, some of the players had not played since their seasons ended in early March. Gogan missed her junior season with a knee injury, but came back as a senior to finish tied for second on the team in points with 11.

“Our first practice was a little rusty, but we had so much improvement by our practice (Saturday) morning,” Gogan said. “It just felt great to be back out on the ice with everybody. I didn’t realize how big of an honor it was before I came here, and then it really hits you. Only 16 people in the state for all the girls’ teams got selected, and it’s crazy that I was one of them.”

The Hartford and Woodstock girls, who met in the VPA Division II state championship game at Gutterson with the Woodstock prevailing, each had one representative for the Vermont team — Skylar Haley for the Wasps and Nora Knudsen for the Hurricanes.

Woodstock forward Evan Kurash was the lone local player for the Vermont boys, while Hanover forward Curtis Rice and defenders Spencer Lawe and Matthew Walsh played for New Hampshire. Walsh scored on a wrist shot from just in front of the blue line late in the second period to extend New Hampshire’s lead to 3-1.

“I looked up and I saw that I had a little bit of space,” Walsh said. “I realized I had to make a cut, and it left me an opening. I don’t think (the goaltender) ever saw it. It just squeaked by his blocker hand.”

Walsh won the accuracy shooting event at Friday evening’s skills competition, which also featured a speed skating event, a puck-handling obstacle course and a one-on-one shootout between an offensive player and a goaltender.

Gogan will attend Paul Smith’s College in upstate New York, and she plans to play varsity hockey there for their non-NCAA program. Walsh is off to Providence College in the fall and is hoping to play club hockey.

“Competing against Vermont is always a grind,” Walsh said. “It’s a little bit personal. There’s always a little bit of pride on the line, even as much as we like to keep it fun. (The game) was a little faster than we were expecting, but we were able to match it.”
