WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Elliot Rupp had five goals and three assists, and Maddie Barwood added four goals as the Hartford High girls lacrosse team cruised past visiting Brattleboro, 12-3, on Wednesday evening.
Grace Gardner, Alice Piper and Nora Lyons each scored as well for the Hurricanes (2-0), who only needed two saves from goaltender MacKenzie Arnold.
“This was a total team effort,” ‘Canes head coach Heather Hartford said. “The defense played consistently as a unit to close down the Brattleboro attack and our settled offense proved effective against a strong zone defense.”
Hartford will host Vergennes on Saturday.
MANCHESTER, N.H. — The Cardinals, playing the second day of a back-to-back, dropped to 0-2 in a shutout loss to the Pioneers. Stevens will be at Hopkinton next Monday.
LANGDON, N.H. — The Royals (0-1) were held to just one hit in their season opener, a shutout loss to the host Wildcats.
Senior Allan Hammond saved Mascoma from being no-hit with a second-inning single but was stranded at third base. Junior Zach Thompson took the loss for the Royals, allowing eight runs (six earned) in four innings of work before being relieved by freshman Brody Goulette. Three of Fall Mountain’s runs came home on passed balls.
It was the first game of Hunter Campbell’s tenure as Royals head coach after a winless season in 2021.
“Good first game, I’m proud of our guys and excited for the season,” Campbell said. “We are a young team with nine freshmen, so it was a great chance to get the jitters out and learn from our mistakes moving forward.”
Mascoma is at Monadnock on Monday.
BENNINGTON, Vt. — The Hurricanes (0-1) opened their season with a loss to the Patriots despite a strong start on the mound from senior Colin Vielleux. Hartford will be at Windsor next Tuesday.
HILLSBORO, N.H. — The Tigers (0-2) fell to the Hillcats on Wednesday afternoon and will come home for the first time next Monday against Fall Mountain.
LANGDON, N.H. — The Royals (0-1) were pummeled by the Wildcats in their season opener after decisively defeating Fall Mountain three times last year, including a 27-run outburst in the second round of the playoffs.
Mascoma opens the home portion of its schedule against Kearsarge on Friday.
NASHUA, N.H. — Making their second trip to Nashua this week, the Bears (3-0) had to sweat this one out after their 8-1 win at Nashua South on Monday, but were able to edge the Titans to stay unbeaten.
Hanover got an 8-0 victory from Eleanor Van Aalst at No. 1 singles and an 8-1 win from Campbell White at No. 6. At No. 4, Natalie Feyrer won in a tiebreak to even the match at three apiece entering the double portion.
Van Aalst and Rachel Rockmore gave the Bears an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, and after a loss by the No. 3 team, Feyrer and Mackenzie Liu clinched the match for Hanover with an 8-5 win.
The Bears are back home Thursday against Concord.
CLAREMONT — The Cardinals, down a starter, dropped to 0-3 and have not won an individual match yet this season.
Kamdyn Aldrich came closest Wednesday at No. 3 singles, with her Warriors opponent winning 8-6. Aldrich and Izabela Eitapence fell 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, but no other individual or pairing took more than one game.
Stevens is back in action on April 21 at Pelham.
