CANTERBURY — A 43-year-old Manchester man was charged with driving under the influence after crashing his car off the side of Interstate 93 on Saturday night.

Vito Paulino was pulled from his burning vehicle by a New Hampshire State Police trooper and passing driver after the car veered off the road and crashed into a stand of trees in Canterbury, according to a state police news release.

Paulino was taken to Concord Hospital to be evaluated for injuries and the highway was shut down temporarily as Canterbury firefighters worked to extinguish the fully engulfed car.

Police received calls from “numerous motorists” around 6:45 p.m. that a vehicle traveling north on I-93 was driving recklessly and having trouble keeping its lane, the release said.

Trooper Kevin McGregor ultimately found the car and witnessed the crash. Police say they later determined that Paulino was driving impaired.
