CLAREMONT — More than a dozen firefighters scrambled to knock down a brush fire late Sunday afternoon that had consumed a half-acre of woodland on the east side of Green Mountain in Claremont.
Firefighters were called to 111 Roberts Hill Road around 5:50 p.m. and upon seeing the size of the fire, a general alarm was called, requesting all off-duty personnel to the scene because of the high heat and remote location, according to a news release from the Claremont Fire Department.
Temperatures were in the low 90s that day. After establishing a supply of water, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and crews worked on cooling “hot spots” until about 7:30 p.m. While Claremont crews were on the scene, firefighters from Newport, Cornish and the Ascutney fire departments provided coverage in Claremont.
No cause was given, but the news release said the hot weather and abnormally dry weather in the Twin States remain a concern and cautioned people using motorized off-road vehicles to inspect their exhaust spark arrestors to make sure they are operating properly. It also said no camp fires should be left unattended.
