COLCHESTER, Vt. — Police in Vermont tracked down a man near Interstate 89 who allegedly shot another man multiple times, but when they tried to speak with him, he died by suicide, authorities said Wednesday.

The suspect, Evan Labonte, 24, fled the scene of the shooting in Underhill, Vt., which was reported at about 7:30 a.m, police said. By Wednesday afternoon, the search had expanded to an area near a mobile home park in the nearby community of Colchester.

State police said Labonte had sent multiple text messages to a former girlfriend. The girlfriend’s current boyfriend was shot as he was backing out of his driveway in Underhill, police said. He is listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington. His name hasn’t been released.
