BURLINGTON — The Hartford High girls track and field team picked up a VPA indoor track and field state championship on Sunday at the University of Vermont’s Gardner-Collins Indoor Track.
After two consecutive years of falling short to Rice, the Hurricanes ran away with the competition, outscoring their closest competition, Thetford, by 64 points.
It’s the first time Rice hasn’t won the title in six years.
The victory is Hartford’s first title in boys or girls track and field.
It is also the first girls sport title at Hartford since the girls basketball championship in 2012.
Kennedy Mullen led the charge with victories in four events.
The senior won the 300-meter dash in 44.51 seconds and the 600-meter dash in 1:44.05.
Plus, she won the triple jump (10.50) and long jump (14-11.25).
Mullen wasn’t the only Cane who contributed to the victory, however. Maliya Sinclair won the shot put with a throw of 34-07.75 feet.
Anne Marie Schneller was also victorious in the weight throw with a toss of 31-08.50 feet.
Eleanor Hinckley (7.76) won the 55-meter dash. Caroline Hamilton (9.75) and Gretchen Josselyn (9.78) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 55-meter hurdles.

The Thetford team was led by Kiran Black’s first place time of 9.46 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles.
Teammate Samara Spelman placed second in 9.62 seconds.
The 4×200 relay team finished second.
The Panthers boys team also found triumph a year removed from its second place finish to Oxbow.
The Panthers defeated their second-place Spaulding by 41 points.

WOLFEBORO, N.H. — Taking the ice less than 18 hours after last leaving it, the Raiders (6-10-0, 6-8-0 league) hit empty against the Knights (6-6-0 league) in an NHIAA Division II makeup game at Pop Whalen Arena.
William Danais slipped a screened wrist shot under Lebanon goalie Toby Cromwell’s pads late in the second period for all of the offense Kingswood would need. The Knights’ added third-period strikes from Nicholas Polenza and Bailey Savage, avoiding calamity for their penalty-prone ways by killing off eight Lebanon power plays.
“Four games in a week, yeah, we were absolutely tired,” Lebanon coach Jim Damren said. “Yes, I think we ran out of gas, and you could see it on the power play. Normally our power play is highly efficient, and we had a bunch of chances today, but we couldn’t get anything going.”
Oleg Sheahan posted a 27-save shutout for Kingswood. Crowell finished with 21 stops for Lebanon, which visits Berlin-Gorham on Wednesday.
