ASCUTNEY — The Vermont Agency of Transportation is working to find a contractor to remove the hazardous limbs on the “Tenney” tree that sits at the edge of the park and ride on exit 8 of Interstate 91.

Andrea Wright, the Right-of-Way and Environmental Program Manager with AOT, said in a recent email that the main tree and limbs that are not hazardous to vehicles and people will remain, and the tree will be re-evaluated in the spring. Meanwhile, parking spaces near the tree have been barricaded off as a safety precaution.

The tree is all that remains of the farm of Romaine Tenney, who took his life in 1964 when the state came to seize his property to make room for the interstate. Residents last year demanded the tree be saved after the state said it was dangerous and was dying and could not be saved.
