WINDSOR — Flames tore through a log home on Back Mountain Road Sunday evening, destroying the house and displacing the resident.

Michael Lefebvre, who has lived in the home on 471 Back Mountain Road for a year, was able to get out of the house, but was sent to the hospital for observation Sunday, according to Windsor Fire Chief  Kevin McAllister. Lefebvre’s two cats, who were in the home at the time were still unaccounted for Monday morning.

McAllister said Lefebvre was asleep when the fire started and was awakened by the one working smoke detector around 5:20 p.m. Sunday.

Flames were coming from the roof and the windows of the two-story home by the time firefighters arrived, according to McAllister. Crews weren’t able to get into the building immediately because of the severity of the flames, as well as ammunition held in the house, which detonated because of the fire, McAllister said.

McAllister said he could hear the sound of the ammunition going off, as well as an explosion after firefighters arrived.

The department is still investigating the cause of the fire.

Crews from Windsor, with tankers from West Windsor, Reading, Claremont, and Hartland, battled the flames for about two hours Sunday before they were able to get the fire under control around 7:20 p.m.

The process was made even more difficult by the driveway, which was iced over, causing several firefighters to fall as they tried to fight the flames.

The department also ran into problems with a nearby fire hydrant, which had no water pressure, meaning firefighters had to travel back to the station to fill up their tanks, McAllister said.

The fire destroyed the home, leaving only a charred exterior and a caved-in roof.
