CHELSEA, VT — Hoyt Edward Battey Jr, 93, died peacefully Monday, Oct 28, 2019 at Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born March 26th, 1926 in Springfield, Ma the son of Hoyt and Clara ( Densmore ) Battey the oldest of three children, a brother Donald ( d. 1998 ) and sister Sally Farnham of North Port, Fl.

He attended schools in Ma. and Chelsea Vt and graduated from MIT. He served in the Navy during WW II and was stationed on Guam. After the war Hoyt married Jean Davis and had three children Carol ( d. 1998 ), Hoyt III ( Ned ) of Montpelier married to Elizabeth Ricketts and Janet ( Posie ) of Chelsea.

The family moved to Chelsea, Vt in 1957 where he and his father started HEB Manufacturing. During this time he became a connoisseur of frappes. He became known for his lifelong habit of a frappe and bag of peanuts for breakfast and daily trips to the Post Office where he growled at most everyone. Hoyt cared greatly about his community and donated to many local endeavors over the years.

He served on the school board and was active in the Boy Scouts, VFW and Fish and Game Club. He also attended weekly meetings of the Chelsea Civic Improvement Club. Hoyt was a Deputy Game Warden serving the central Vt region for many years. He also became a pilot and frequently flew out of the airport in Berlin. Fishing was his favorite pastime and he was a member of both the Tunbridge and Sharon Trout Clubs. For almost 30 years he took annual salmon fishing trips with his friend Ray Keyser Jr mostly to St Paul’s Salmon Fishing Club in northern Quebec.

Hoyt had five grandchildren; Hoyt Battey IV ( Kip ), Nicholas Battey, Lucas Battey, Nanci ( McElhaney ) Meza, Cindi ( McElhaney ) Rosa and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Boardway and Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea, Vt. Calling hours will be Sat. November 9th from 2-4 pm at the Boardway and Cilley Funeral Home with graveside services for the family to be held at a later date.
