NORTH HAVERHILL — A 29-year-old Woodsville man was sentenced to three to seven years in New Hampshire State Prison for causing a single-vehicle crash on Route 302 last year that killed his 7-year-old son and injured his 6-year-old daughter.

David Aldrich pleaded guilty last week to negligent homicide — DWI and second degree-assault for the May 4, 2018, crash in Bath, N.H.

The indictments alleged Aldrich was driving under the influence of alcohol when he drove off the roadway and struck a tree, causing fatal injuries to his son and bodily injury to his daughter.

His son, a Woodsville Elementary School student, was pronounced dead at Cottage Hospital.

Aldrich received a second sentence of two to four years, all suspended, on the assault charge.

He told police he’d had several beers before driving and had taken opioid pills and smoked marijuana earlier that day, according to a police affidavit.

The court recommended at his sentencing that he receive an assessment for substance abuse treatment, according to court documents.

Upon his release from prison, he must complete 250 hours of community service.

He can’t reapply for his driver’s license for seven years, and if and when he does, he must have an alcohol ignition interlock device installed in his vehicle for two years, the documents state.
