Two Rivers Printmaking Studio in White River Junction opens a retrospective of prints by the redoubtable Norwich artist Penelope Bennett with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday.

Bennett has work in prominent collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, and one of the prints at MOMA will be among the works on view at Two Rivers. The show is on view through April.

Other First Friday events include:

โ€œThrough the Trees,โ€ a show of pastels by White River Junction artist Kathryn Detzer, opens with a reception from 6 to 8 Friday evening at Long River Gallery. Detzer has been working in pastels for 20 years, but this show marks a foray into abstractions of the natural world. Through May.

Scavenger Gallery holds over โ€œBewildered,โ€ recent work by Montpelier artist Daryl Burtnett in a variety of media, and shows jewelry by gallery owner Stacy Hopkins. A reception from 5:30 to 7:30 features a tasting of wines from Artisanal Cellars.

First Friday elsewhere

The Gallery at the Space on Main, in Bradford, Vt., opens a show of photographs by Emily Marsh with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday. Through March.

โ€œPromises of Spring,โ€ watercolors by Brookfield, Vt., artist Marcia Hammond, opens Friday at Chelsea Public Library. A reception is planned for 6 to 8 p.m. on March 29. Through April.

Of note

Westminster West, Vt., artist Liz deNiord gives a talk at 10 a.m. on Friday in Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Centerโ€™s Auditorium A. The talk, titled โ€œArchaeology of a Painting,โ€ describes how deNiord makes her layered abstract canvases.

โ€œConsidering Kunisada and His Depictions of the Chushingura,โ€ an exhibition of prints by the madly prolific and inventive 19th-century Japanese printmaker, is on view at Matt Brown Fine Art in Lyme through April 6. A talk and viewing party are planned for 2 to 5 p.m. on March 10.

Two Rivers Printmaking Studio is holding a series of workshops led by Upper Valley printmakers through the spring. The next, on drypoint printmaking with Rachel Gross, is scheduled for March 9 and 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.
