STAFF REPORTS

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — It’s official. The Hartford High’s boys hockey team has turned its season around.

Canes sophomore Jacob Dwinell scored the insurance goal with 13 minutes and 40 seconds remaining in the third period and senior Jacob Derosier scored an empty netter with 40 seconds left to lift Hartford, 4-2, over St. Johnsbury at Wendell A. Barwood Arena on Wednesday night.

The victory was Hartford’s third in its last five contests, a stretch that includes only one loss — a 6-0 decision on the road against Woodstock on Monday. The Hurricanes started the season 0-6; they currently sit at 6-10-2 — including a 2-0 loss to the Hilltoppers on Feb. 9 — with two regular-season games remaining.

Derosier scored his third and fourth goals of the season, getting Hartford started with a early tally. A goal by Charlie Scribner — his first of the year — gave the Canes a 2-0 lead after the first period. St. Johnsbury cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second. Scribner’s goal, and the empty-netter by Derosier, sealed the deal.

CONTOOCOOK, N.H. — The No. 11 Royals led, 15-9, at halftime, but couldn’t hang on against No. 6 Hopkinton in the opening round of the NHIAA Division III tournament.

The Bears out-scored Mascoma, 29-13, in the second half and finished the game hitting 18-of-23 foul shots. Bella Kondi led the Royals with 10 points and Emily Moulton scored nine.

“We had a shot to win,” Hammond said. “The season overall was a success, from where the program was four years ago to where it is now. … It hurts to lose, but the program is back on track. We have some nice players coming up. We’re going to get another shot at this.”
