WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The tide is turning for the Hartford High boys hockey team.
The Hurricanes edged visiting Burlington, 2-1, at Wendell A. Barwood Arena on Saturday for their third win in the last five games.
Colston Allen scored four seconds into the second period for the Canes on an assist from A.J. DuBois to give the hosts the lead. Jacob Dwinell added a goal with 2:28 left in the second, with Allen assisting, to put the Canes up, 2-0.
Burlington scored early in the third period to get within a goal. The Hartford defense answered the call from there on to preserve the narrow lead. Burlington pulled their goalie in the final three minutes and the Canes had to kill a 6-on-4 penalty to survive to the final buzzer.
Netminder Ross McFate made 25 saves for the win to anchor a strong Hartford defensive effort.
“He really came up big during that sequence (late in the third period) and there were some key blocks by the defense as well,” Hartford coach Todd Bebeau said.
The Canes (3-7-1) visit Colchester at Leddy Park in Burlington on Wednesday.
DOVER, N.H. — The Raiders were shut out by the host Green Wave, dropping to 6-7-0 overall, 5-6-0 in NHIAA play. Next up for the Raiders is a home game against Spaulding on Wednesday.
MERIDEN — Arlo Merritt, Teddy Griffin and Tomas Mazura each had a goal and an assist to lead the Wildcats (21-4-0) over New Hampton.
Goalie Veeti Kohvakka made 27 saves to earn the victory. Sullivan Mack added his team-leading 21st goal. Brian Carrabes and Drew Bennett each had assists.
KUA will visit Phillips Andover on Wednesday.
SALEM, N.H. — Six different Marauders found the back of the net as Hanover (10-2 NHIAA Division I, 11-4 overall) defeated Salem.
Tonio Correa, Willie Laycock, Casey Graham, Joey Goff, Curtis Rice and Charlie Plottner scored for the Marauders, while Sylas Obering (two), Hans Williams (two), Goff, Plottner and Cameron Woods dished out assists.
Ben Plottner made 13 saves for the Marauders, who host Concord on Wednesday.
LYNDON, Vt. — The Canes ran out of gas in their fourth game in seven days, falling in a shutout to Kingdom.
Goalie Zoey Pfeiffer made 18 saves for Hartford (2-12-1). Defender Ceci Spaulding had a strong game according to coach Bill Goldsworthy.
The Canes host Middlebury on Wednesday.
MIDDLETON, Mass. — Austin Prep (13-0-0), the top-ranked team in Massachusetts, snapped a 1-1 tie with three third-period goals to pull away from Hanover (5-3-1 NHIAAA Division I, 6-5-1 overall).
Sage McGinley-Smith scored for the Marauders in the first perion a tip-in from Clara Boland. Bryn Kable also assisted on the goal, only the fourth scored on Austin Prep all season.
Rebekah Rudd made 22 saves for Hanover, which greets Exeter on Monday.
THETFORD — The Panthers scored 32 points in the second half to pull away from the Blue Devils.
Emi Vaughan (14 points) and Kiana Johnson (11) paced the Thetford attack. The Panthers led, 17-10, at halftime before finding a groove on both ends of the floor after the break.
“We worked on a different defense in practice and today was the first day we used it,” Thetford coach Eric Ward said. “We forced some turnovers and created some easy points.”
The Panthers (12-1) will visit Lamoille on Tuesday.
ORFORD — The Golden Horde rampaged their way to a 38-9 lead at halftime to beat the Raptors (2-10).
“West Rutland is a very good team. They passed the ball well, they rebounded well,” Rivendell coach Dennis Fitzgerald said. “We’re getting there. We’re playing better every game.”
Casey Ghio had eight points for the Raptors, who play at Twinfield on Monday.
PLAINFIELD, Vt. — Freshman Jane Lackley scored 22 points to lead the Wasps (5-8) to a win at the Wildcats.
“We leaned heavily on Jane, again. Twin Valley put a lot of pressure on Jane, but she came through anyway,” Woodstock coach Jason Johnson said.
The Wasps went on a 15-4 in the second quarter to lead, 20-15, at the break. Woodstock then closed out the win with 17 points in the fourth quarter.
Next up for the Wasps is a visit to Bellows Falls on Monday.
MORETOWN, Vt. — The Highlanders closed the game on a 13-5 run to drop the Olympians to 5-8 on the season.
Tiffany Longmoore had nine points for Oxbow. Kaysea Neil added eight points. The Olympians play at Montpelier on Tuesday.
DANVILLE, Vt. — The Phoenix dropped to 1-12 with the loss.
Tia Kendall had four points for Sharon, which plays host to White River Valley on Friday.
MANCHESTER, Vt. — The Bulldogs outpaced the visiting Wasps on Friday night.
Harrison Morse had 17 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, to pace Woodstock (4-6). Gabe Marsicovetere added 13 points.
Jake Nicholson made nine of the Bulldogs’ 15 3-pointers and finished with 30 points.
Woodstock visits Brattleboro on Tuesday.

PLYMOUTH, N.H. — The Tigers had a strong showing in a tournament at Plymouth, finishing eighth out of 16 teams.
Luke Bartlett (195 pounds) recorded his first varsity pin. Marius Edwards made the podium with a 3-2 record, including an upset of the third overall seed. Joshua Sharron (132 pounds) won with a pin. Gavin Lovely (182 pounds) took gold with a pin while picking up the 98th win of his career.
BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — The Yellowjackets qualified second and ended up second behind host Brattleboro in the Baker bowl final.
Grayson Frazer had 168 and 191 for Windsor in qualifying. Brayton Bailey added 179-144 and Samm Erskine had 156-166. The Jacks beat White River Valley, two games to one, in the first round before falling to Brattleboro in three games in the final.
Hannah Bryan rolled games of 148-135 for WRV in qualifying, ahead of teammates Alex Madden (146-129) and Nicholas Ramos (125-77).
Windsor hosts Hartford, Brattleboro and Springfield on Saturday when both the Jacks and Hurricanes will be celebrating senior day.
