Missisquoi (8-2-0), which entered the day behind only Woodstock (7-1-2) and Colchester (7-2-1) in the D-II standings, scored the game’s first seven goals. Hartford broke the visitors’ shutout bid on Nick Cameron’s second goal of the year, assisted by Jackson Balch and Jonas Spaulding, late in regulation.
“It’s an example of a team that’s at the very top of the league standings and we’re, unfortunately, near the bottom,” Bebeau said. “That’s nothing against my kids; they played a very good team tonight. … They’re deep, they’re talented, they play a heady style and they gave us fits all night.”
Braylen Parents scored twice with three assists and Hunter Masons had two goals and two helpers for Missisquoi. Goalies Ross McFate and Billy Mann combined on 21 saves for the Hurricanes, who have impressed Bebeau with their work ethic even if the wins haven’t followed along.
“I see a group of kids that comes to the rink every day energized and trying to get better,” Bebeau said. “We have made some growth. We’re learning that, at this level, we need to be consistent shift after shift, period after period. We’re still early in the process of becoming a complete hockey team.”
Hartford visits rival Woodstock on Wednesday before returning to WABA to host U-32 on Saturday.
Beekmantown (N.Y.) 6, Hanover 5
Chazy, n.y.
Neither squad owned more than a one-goal cushion. Hanover rallied from two first-period deficits, Emma Tysinger eliminating the first on a Sage McGinley-Smith assist and Pepper Joseph taking care of the other courtesy of a Violet Sperry pass.
Maggie Lee gave the Marauders their first lead with 40 seconds left in the middle stanza, converting a Meredith Morhun pass, but Beekmantown leveled with 10.6 seconds on the clock for a 3-3 tie at the second intermission.
Beekmantown needed just 13 seconds to answer a McGinley-Smith goal at 3:19 of the third, taking the lead with 3:34 remaining only to have Sperry (one goal, two assists) equalize one last time with 1:14 left. Celine Juneau, who scored the Eagles’ first goal barely a minute into the contest, notched the last-ditch winner.
“We have to take some positives from this; when we played them the last time, we had trouble putting the puck in the net,” said Hanover coach John Dodds, referencing Hanover’s 2-1 loss to Beekmantown at Campion Rink on Feb. 5. “We did a better job offensively today, but we’re going to have to learn some tough lessons about being vulnerable after scoring goals and not taking it easy. I felt like I was watching the Patriots all over again.”
Aidan Stone and Claire Yegian combined on 25 saves for Hanover, which heads to Andover High — the second-ranked team in Massachusetts high school girls hockey — on Saturday.
