Hanover — Registration for the annual Elden Murray Photographic Exhibition and Competition officially is open.

The amateur photography contest, now in its 43rd year, is co-sponsored by Hanover’s Howe Library and the Quechee Area Camera Club.

It is open to people of all ages from the Upper Valley, and the deadline for submissions is Jan. 21. Photographs will be displayed Feb. 3-27 in the Howe Library.

“You don’t have to have a library card with us,” said Megan Coleman, the library’s programming coordinator.

Many of the dozens of people who submit photographs tend to be retired, but there also is a special category for budding photographers.

“We do have an under-18 category, but we don’t have a lot of entrants in it, which makes me sad,” Coleman said. “We’ve had a 4- and 5-year-old enter before.”

Last year, 64 people submitted 121 entries to the contest. This year, area photographer Jim Block and graphic designer, photo editor and art director Laura Osborn will serve as judges.

“We do have a lot of people who enter year after year, quite a number of regulars,” Coleman said. “But we always seem to have a good chunk of first-timers too.”

The contest is named for Elden Murray, who was a prominent Hanover businessman, Coleman said. After he retired, he developed an interest in photography and a friendship with Emil Rueb, who owned a camera shop in town.

“Personally I just love seeing what people take photos of,” Coleman said.
