Newport — Newport police say speed, alcohol and drugs were not factors in a school-bus-versus-motor-vehicle crash by LaValley Building Supply in Newport on Monday In which a man remains hospitalized.

An SAU #43 school bus driven by Gail McGirr, 67, and a Toyota Corolla driven by Andrew Sheckler, 20, collided around 6:30 a.m. on Monday, Newport Detective Lt. Charles Rataj said on Thursday.

Sheckler suffered a significant head injury in the crash and remains hospitalized, Rataj said.

McGirr was uninjured; there were no students on the bus at the time of the crash.

Preliminary investigation found that Sheckler, who was driving west on Route 103, tried to make a left-hand turn into LaValley when the passenger side of his car collided with the eastbound school bus.

Sheckler was transported by ambulance to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

A message left for Superintendent Cindy Gallagher wasn’t returned.
