People are needed to work at the front desk and reception at the hospital and the health center. Collins said this role is perfect for people who are social, active and know the community well.
“Volunteers are important to New London Hospital, as they are warm and inviting community members who share the same experience as our patients and visitors,” said Nancy Collins, volunteer manager at the hospital. “They share a smile or a helping hand.”
Collins is currently looking for three people who are available in the mornings to help at the Newport Health Center and six or more people to volunteer at the hospital. These individuals will join a team of about 95 volunteers who help keep the hospital and clinic running smoothly.
“Many of our volunteers meet new people and make new friends who support each other. This position helps our staff with patient flow, ensuring that patients get to where they need to go,” Collins said. “In this position the volunteers converse with many people, share in lighthearted conversation and a laugh or two. It is rewarding when they know they have touched someone with their kindness.”
Although the Newport Health Center is quieter than the hospital, the volunteers there are just as important, Collins said.
The hospital gift shop also has an opening for a volunteer. Retail experience is beneficial, but not necessary.
“The gift shop is good for a person that has a warm, welcoming personality and who can show empathy when needed,” Collins said.
This position is especially important, since proceeds from the gift shop benefit the hospital.
For people who would like to be involved directly with patients and their families, working in patient support is a good fit. Patient support volunteers work in the emergency room and are crucial for alleviating the burden on staff and making patients feel more at ease.
“The volunteer can help to ease the stress associated with a patient in this setting by being supportive if the patient is alone, communicating wait time, getting a warm blanket if needed,” Collins said.
Volunteers on the hospitality cart bring newspapers, magazines and coffee to patients and their families, easing the stress of being in the hospital.
“This position helps our busy staff by supporting our patients’ needs, notifying staff if necessary,” Collins said. “These volunteers have the opportunity to listen to the patients, to share a laugh or to comfort if a patient is going through a rough time.”
The ABC Child Care Center at the hospital also has volunteer positions available.
Most of the volunteer shifts are on weekdays, although there are weekend shifts available in the emergency department. The hospital asks volunteers to commit to two or more hours a week for six months. Student volunteers are asked to commit to 60 hours.
