Woodstock
Isaac Emery and Andrew Gubbins staked Woodstock to a 2-0 first-half lead, and the Wasps rode out several close calls to eventually earn a 3-2 win over the Hurricanes at Woodstock Union High School.
Woodstock (6-3-1) never trailed, regaining a two-goal cushion on Emery’s second goal of the afternoon midway through the second half.
Hartford hit a goalpost in the first half, then hit another post and had a shot carom off the crossbar and nearly across the line in the second.
“It was very back and forth; we know it could have gone either way,” Woodstock coach Tom Avellino said. “We had our chances and didn’t capitalize. They had their chances and didn’t capitalize. We don’t have any time to think about it, because we’re right back at it on Friday.”
Barely 24 hours removed from a one-goal win over Otter Valley, the Wasps jumped on the board when Emery converted an Emilio Montano feed in the 15th minute. Gubbins finished an Emery assist six minutes later. Hartford (3-7-0) drew one back in the 60th minute on an own goal, to which the Wasps responded on Emery’s second score of the afternoon, from Liam Brennan, in the 65th.
Nick Jones converted a penalty kick with two minutes left for the Canes’ other strike.
“We’re starting slow, and whether we finish strong or not, it’s dependent upon them at this point,” said Hartford coach Kevin Guilbault, whose squad has lost its last six matches. “We’ve lost a few in a row. Our confidence is really down, and we’re very easily thrown off.”
Shane Miller and Ian O’Brien split the netminding for Hartford, combining on three saves.
Goalkeeper Steven Bianchi stopped three shots for Woodstock, which plays its third game in four days in a Maxfield Sports Complex rematch with Hartford on Friday.

Mascoma coach Keli Green said she let a number of younger players “who don’t typically get a lot of minutes” take over in the second half, and their chemistry and energy nearly rescued a result.
Lizz Pelton made nine saves in the first half and sophomore Connor Thompson added eight in the second half for Mascoma, which dropped one spot out of the NHIAA Division III state tournament field with three matches to play. The Royals host Prospect Mountain on Friday.
