Jeffrey Morin Sr., 53, of Claremont, has a change of plea hearing scheduled for next month in Windsor Superior Court.
Morin, who has since retired from the fire department, pleaded not guilty to four misdemeanors in February. They included two counts of driving under the influence and single counts of reckless or gross negligent motor vehicle operation and leaving the scene of a crash where property damage occurred.
The incident allegedly occurred around 7:15 p.m. on Jan. 18, when Brenda Pellerin, who lives in a home on Route 12 in Ascutney near the intersection with Route 5, called police and said a truck had just crashed into the side of her house, according to a police affidavit. No one was injured.
The operator then drove away, but was located in a pickup truck at a gas station on Route 131 in Weathersfield. The homeowners’ son followed him there, according to the affidavit.
Police identified the driver as Morin, who first denied hitting the house and said he had just come from the road in which he lives, and had stopped to get a coffee before heading to work at Valley Regional Hospital.
Morin told the officer he’d had “a drink” around noon that day, and had taken the sleeping medication Ambien about an hour later, the affidavit says.
Morin had a blood alcohol content of 0.14 about 30 minutes after the incident, according to the affidavit.
His attorney, Chris Dall, said this week that he couldn’t comment on the change of plea hearing other than to say the matter will be “concluded” that day.
He also declined to comment on just what charges Morin would plead to.
Assistant Windsor County State’s Attorney Glenn Barnes, who is prosecuting the case, also declined to comment at this stage.
Several court filings from June indicate Morin had intended on fighting the charges. His attorney filed several motions to suppress information in the case.
Claremont Fire Chief Bryan Burr said in an email this week that Morin retired from his position around April. He declined to comment further, saying it’s a personnel matter.
Morin’s change of plea hearing is scheduled for Oct. 9.
