Mascoma improved to 8-1 with the win, while the Bears fell from the undefeated ranks and are now 7-1.
“It was a huge team effort,” Mascoma coach Jenn Hammond said. “We came out strong and determined to win. It was bittersweet for some after the loss in the championship game (last season), and they used that to fuel their intensity today.”
Morgan Prentiss hit the net to snap a scoreless tie eight minutes into the second half. Amelia Wilson scored off a corner four minutes later for an insurance goal.
The key to the game was slowing Newfound’s dynamic scoring duo of Caroline Marchand and Tiffany Doan. Hammond had her charges play a man-to-man defense similar to a basketball defense to take both out of the equation.
Mascoma controlled play offensively, finishing with 12 shots on goal and six corners.
“Offensively, we dominated the game. We kept it in their end a lot, but they had a super strong goalie,” Hammond said.
Mascoma goalie Abby Duhaime made one save for the shutout. The Royals play host to Winnisquam on Tuesday.
