Newbury, Vt. — Firefighters were able to save the Newbury Village Store on Monday after a fire broke out in a neighboring two-story shed.

Newbury Fire Chief John Renfrew said when firefighters arrived on scene around 8:30 a.m., they immediately concentrated their efforts on saving the circa 1840s store.

The shed was a total loss, but the store only suffered minor damage to some vinyl siding. There also was minor smoke and flame damage in the attic of the building, as well as some broken windows, the chief said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The store, which will be open today, is owned by Melissa and Lance Battersby. The chief said the shed also was owned by them.
