Newbury, n.h. — Playing junior varsity soccer competition wasn’t always easy for the Mount Royal Academy girls in recent seasons. The foes they played usually had better ball-possession skills, and that occasionally made for long afternoons for the Knights.

Now they’re varsity. And things are changing.

Antigoni Souliotis knocked home a Claire McMenaman pass near the midway point of the second half, and Mount Royal earned a 2-1 win over Newport in the Sunapee private school’s varsity girls soccer debut on Friday at Fisher Field.

Hannan Fraioli also scored for the Knights (1-0), while Caty Boles struck for the Tigers (0-1).

“The girls were uplifted by the fact that they could actually possess the ball,” MRA coach Derek Tremblay said. “When we were doing JV and were playing Hopkinton and Kearsarge and all the others, we couldn’t possess the ball. In terms of possessing and that being such a plus for them, we had significant scoring chances.”

Fraioli gave MRA a lead in the 25th minute, which Boles cancelled out before halftime. Sophie LaRose posted the win in the Knights’ goal, making five saves. Zeta Morris (two) and Shelby Adams (five) split seven saves for Newport.

Mount Royal hosts Concord Christian on Monday. Newport takes on Sunapee on Tuesday.

Sunapee 8, Woodsville 2

Woodsville — The Lakers (1-0) looked strong in spots and dominant on the scoreboard, rolling over the Engineers (0-1) in the schools’ season opener.

Abby Pollari and Marybeth Gordon had hat tricks to lead Sunapee, which split its offense evenly over both halves. Hannah Cooney had a goal and an assist, Ellie Frederick provided a goal, and Pollari and Star Lucas each notched an assist. Abby Rowell and Miah Hamm split seven saves in the Sunapee goal.

Woodsville converted a pair of corner kicks to account for its offense. Olivia Sarkis netted the first on an Emily Farr assist. Nye Adamkowski accounted for the second in a goalmouth scramble.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday as Sunapee hosts Newport and Woodsville entertains Colebrook.

Hanover 2, Souhegan 1

Amherst, n.h. — The Marauders (1-0) shook off warm weather and came within two minutes of posting a season-opening shutout of the Sabers (0-1).

Eleanor van Aalst got Hanover on the board in the 30th minute with a 25-yard bomb past the Souhegan keeper. The Marauders doubled the lead when Sonja Lippman converted out of a scramble, with Sage McGinley-Smith and Kira Smith providing assists. Bella Bardales made six saves in the Hanover net, surrendering only a Souhegan breakaway goal in the 78th minute.

“It was hot; we still looked like we were in the preseason,” Hanover coach Doug Kennedy said. “Our seniors really came through and held the team together. We came out stronger in the second half.”

Hanover is home to Coe-Brown on Monday.

Woodsville — Sunapee (1-0) blew open a 2-2 halftime tie with a six-goal second half en route to a season-opening victory.

Michael Mullen piled three of his four goals into the second 40 minutes to lead the Lakers’ attack, also adding an assist. Drew Nichols contributed two goals and an assist, Lane Smith finished with one of each, Parker Reed also scored a goal and Jackson Cooney added a helper. Sean Moynihan and Justin Claus combined in five saves.

Connor Maccini and Alex Enderson took turns setting each other up for goals for Woodsville. The Engineers twice erased first-half deficits before Sunapee pulled away.

Sunapee visits Newport on Monday. Woodsville is home to Colebrook on Tuesday.

Belmont 8, Mascoma 0

West Canaan — The Red Raiders (1-0), bolstered by a roster with 13 seniors, used a six-goal first half to put away the Royals (0-1).

Lizz Pelton made 12 saves on a busy day in the Mascoma net. First-year Royals coach Keli Green also said Ben Schwarz “played a great game in the middle of the field.”

“Belmont is an experienced and skilled team,” Green added. “They were deep in the playoffs last year and only lost two seniors.”

Mascoma will look for a better result when Fall Mountain comes to town on Tuesday.

Dartmouth 2, Quinnipiac 0

Hanover — Zoe Enright and Remy Borinsky struck in the first half, goalkeeper Mariel Gordon tossed a four-save shutout and the Big Green (1-0-0) kicked off their season with a victory.

Enright converted a Hayley Soriano feed in the 13th minute to put Dartmouth ahead to stay. Borinsky doubled the advantage in the 32nd, scoring from the spot after Quinnipiac’s Jess Gargan drew a straight red card for a hand ball in the Bobcats’ penalty area.

The Big Green owned a 15-6 edge in shot attempts and a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Dartmouth heads to Rhode Island on Sunday.
