West Lebanon — Norwich native Brendan Rhim has a busy week ahead of him. He’s spending seven days riding a bicycle all over California, and he’s bringing some friends along as well.

The Hanover High graduate and former Marauder boys soccer goalkeeper is part of a seven-man team for Holowesko Citadel Racing that will ride in this week’s seven-stage Amgen Tour of California.

The country’s top stage race and a tuneup event for next month’s Tour de France, the California race begins today in Long Beach and concludes in Sacramento on May 19.

Rhim is expected to play the role of domestique in the race, one of the team members who do much of the hard work to set up the team’s top rider for individual success. The 22-year-old, who has been splitting his time between riding for Holowesko and completing his studies at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., most recently rode in stages for Holowesko at this month’s Redlands (Calif.) Bicycle Classic.

Rhim helped Furman win a national team cycling championship in 2015, and he’s had to overcome a broken collarbone suffered later that year before continuing his development. He’ll be part of a star-studded field in California, as veteran Tour de France competitors Mark Cavendish, Marcel Kittel and Peter Sagan are all participating.

NBC Sports Network plans live coverage of every stage of the tour, beginning at 1 p.m. today. Information on the race and results can be found at www.amgentourofcalifornia.com.
