Rutland — The 33-year-old Springfield, Vt., man convicted of killing Wesley Wing in Springfield in April 2015 has been charged with assaulting a correctional officer while awaiting sentencing.

Gregory Smith allegedly attempted to cause serious bodily injury to the officer, according to a Vermont State Police news release issued on Wednesday. The officer sustained minor injuries.

The alleged incident happened while Smith was incarcerated at Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility in Rutland, Vt. He has since been transferred to Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans, Vt.

Smith faces a count of aggravated assault and is slated to appear in Rutland Superior Court on June 4. He remains incarcerated.

A jury in February found Smith guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Wing in the men’s Springfield neighborhood. Smith is awaiting sentencing on that conviction. A date for his sentencing has not been set.
