Grafton — A late-night fire on Tuesday on Riddle Hill Road destroyed a family’s garage and came close to badly damaging their home.

Grafton Fire Chief John Babiarz said some of the siding melted, but thanks to a metal roof which distributed the heat, the house didn’t go up in flames.

The home, which sits about 20 feet from the unattached garage, is still habitable. It is owned by Samantha Grunewald, according to property records. No one was injured and the cause of the 11:55 p.m. fire remains undetermined. Grunewald and her family were inside their house at the time, and she acted quickly to get everyone out safely, Babiarz said.

When firefighters responded, the garage was fully engulfed in flames and the front portion of it had already collapsed, the chief said. The garage was reduced to a pile of rubble and two vehicles — one inside the garage — were destroyed. Farm animals in a barn on the property were unharmed. No one was home when a reporter stopped by on Wednesday. Several agencies responded to the call in addition to Grafton, including Canaan, Enfield, Danbury, Lebanon, Hanover and Springfield.
