Katy majored in psychology at the University of Chicago. Her master’s degree in speech and language pathology was earned at DePaul University. She continued her studies in linguistics at the Universities of Cambridge and Salzburg. She was the first speech and language clinician to work with special education students in the Westport schools. She also maintained a private practice in foreign accent reduction.
A member of the Westport Representative Town Meeting for four years, she also served on the Town Commission for the Elderly, the Town Committee for Excellence and Diversity in Education and on the Tree Board.
After her retirement she became very active in the league of Women Voters of Westport. She served as President three times and was active on many committees, with a particular interest in voter services and environmental issues.
She is survived by her son, Hugh Goldsmith and his four children, Andrew and his wife, Amber, Summer and Jasper; her brother, David Hugh Coulson and his wife; great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Katy was predeceased by her husband, Herbert A. Goldschmidt; daughter, Alison; and brother, Alan Coulson.
At her request, there will be no memorial service. Contributions in her memory to the Nature Conservancy or to the United Negro College Fund would be most appreciated.
