Dorothy J. Hall

Hanover, N.H. — Dorothy J. Hall, citizen of Kendal at Hanover Community and the world, passed on peacefully, quickly and in her own bed at age 93, having spent Christmas day in a vigil, holding hands and sharing words with her younger brother, Leland (Pete) Hall, and being cared for by her devoted Kendal care givers. Dorothy was born in the Northwest (Forest Grove Oregon) on Sept. 25, l924, to her parents Glen L. and Elizabeth (Beth) Hoar, and died on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2017, in the Northeast, having moved in l998 from California where she spent the majority of her adult life, to Hanover, to live close to her brother and his family.

Dorothy was the poster child for life long learning. She was formally educated in Salem, Ore. public schools, went on to study and receive degrees from Willamette University, University of Washington, Chaouinard Art Institute, and University of Southern California. Her education continued with careers in teaching, art, counseling, and interior decorating. She traveled the world extensively and served (twice) as Dean of Students for Semester at Sea, reflecting her commitment to educating others, and herself in the appreciation of world cultures and travel. Dorothy cared deeply for and learned from those in need , giving her time and resources to many organizations as a board member and volunteer. Locally Dorothy was a very active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, The Upper Valley Haven, and the Kendal community.

She could amuse and inspire a table full of family or friends, a classroom of students, a committee of fellow workers or a national conference with her humor and her wisdom. But it was the one-on-one relationships in which she thrived the most, leaving in her wake countless individuals who loved and adored her. In addition to her warmth, humor, and her ability interesting conversation, Dorothy also had a serious and straight forward manner that served herself and others well.

Dorothy had a full and abundant life. She was ready to go. She leaves the world a much better place. She leaves the world with a joyful and grateful heart to her God and her Lord Jesus Christ. She will be greatly missed.

Dorothy is survived by her only sibling, her younger brother, Leland (Pete) Hall and his wife, Maureen Manning Hall; and by many nieces and nephews: Susan and John (Singe) Arnold, and their children, Audrey (Madi), Mary, St John (Sie), and Satchel; Matthew and Christina Hall, and their children, Isabelle and Lilli; Mitchell (Fred), and Lisa Hall and their children, Lucas, Tanner and Brady; and Betsy Hall and her son, Sam. She is also survived by Maureen’s sister, Phyllis Ellis, her four children and eight grandchildren; her borrowed cousin, Betty Allebach; many first cousins in the northwest; and countless residents and staff members in the Kendal family, all with whom she had a strong caring relationship.

Dorothy’s memorial service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, in the Gathering Room at Kendal, 80 Lyme Road, Hanover, N H. 03755
