Fred Weld, of Fred C. Weld Logging in Cornish; Spencer Laramie, of Laramie Logging in Canaan; and outgoing council chairman Ben Crowell, of CCM Logging and Land Clearing in Springfield, N.H.; were among the past chairman who were given a specially engraved hatchet bearing the words, “New Hampshire Timber Harvesting Council Celebrating 25 years, 1992-2017,” the council said in a news release.
Also at the convention, Chris Goodnow, of Goodnow Trucking in Winchester, N.H., was named the new chairman of council.
The Timber Harvesting Council was founded in 1993 and is sponsored by the New Hampshire Timberland Owners Association, the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension, and the UNH Thompson School of Applied Sciences’ Forest Technology Program. It works to provide training, to improve the public’s perception of logging, to recognize peers, and to improve awareness and compliance with timber harvesting laws. It also sponsors, with the Timberland Owners Association, the Professional Loggers Program, a voluntary certification program for New Hampshire loggers that teaches basic silviculture, wildlife management and improving forestland aesthetics. The program also teaches forest professionals about laws and regulations governing forestry work and offers instruction in basic first aid and techniques for operating forestry tools safely and productively.
The Vermont Institute of Natural Science, in partnership with Speak Inc., will host a four-part workshop series exploring debate, public speaking and civil discourse through the lens of environmental issues facing the Upper Valley region. Facilitators will focus on teaching the foundations of strong debate: identifying credible information, constructing arguments, considering counter evidence and crafting persuasive speeches. The Tuesday evening workshops will be held on Nov. 7, Nov. 14, Nov. 28 and Dec. 5 (no workshop on Nov. 21), from 7-9 p.m., at the VINS Nature Center, 149 Natures Way, Quechee. The Upper Valley chapter of SCORE is offering a workshop, Managing Cash Flow for Small Business Success, on Thursday, from 6-9 p.m., at 20 W. Park St., Lebanon, Suite 316, in the Citizens Bank Building. This workshop addresses business management from a cash-flow perspective. It delves into the financial statements and introduces concepts such as working capital, inventory and receivables turnover, debt capacity and other important financial management matters. It addresses how to approach suppliers, customers and lenders from the perspective of successfully managing cash flow. The workshop will be presented by Morris McInnes, a professor for many years at Harvard Business School, MIT Sloan School, Sawyer Business School and Manchester Business School in the U.K. He also served is several corporate and has been a consultant to international clients. Southeastern Vermont Community Action is recruiting volunteers to help provide free tax preparation assistance for lower-income taxpayers for the 2018 tax filing season at sites in White River Junction and Windsor during tax season.
