Hanover — Town officials say they’re switching from solid salt pellets to liquid brine on Main Street as a way to keep roads passable this winter.

Road crews for the past few years have been using a combination of the two on sidewalks and streets, but now will use only liquid brine on Main Street.

The change will provide savings and a positive environmental impact, but may mean that roads will take longer to clear, officials said.

“We have full intentions of continuing the quality of service to the public we have maintained in the past,” Hanover Department of Public Works supervisor Jim Cray said in an email, “but there may be times when clean, clear sidewalks on Main Street are not achieved quite as soon as the old method.”
