Crescent City, Fla. — Bette Jean (Gardner) Chayer, 80, entered our heavenly Father’s home early Friday morning, June 23, 2017, at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach after a brief illness.

She was born on July 12, 1936, in Hollywood, Fla., and graduated from Broward High School in 1954, and later earned an Associate Degree in business. She met her husband of 53 years while he was serving in the U.S. Navy. As a military wife she lived all over the country from Hawaii to Vermont, eventually retiring back to Florida. While living in Woodstock, Vt., she sold Real Estate & was a partner with Chayer Appraisal Service. In her spare time she enjoyed researching her genealogy with family and friends. She had traced her ancestry back to Charlemagne and was a member of the Baronial Order of Magna Carta. Bette was a passionate Republican and would spend hours talking and debating politics with anyone who would listen. While living in Polk County, Fla., she served as a delegate to the Florida State Republican convention, and enjoyed working on various political campaigns.

She is survived by her husband, Robert of Crescent City; a son, Robert, his wife, Angela and granddaughter, Reagan also of Crescent City; and a brother, James Gardner and his wife, Pat of Long Boat Key, Fla.

Mrs. Chayer’s ashes will be interred at Eden Cemetery at 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 12, and Celebration of her life will be at the family’s home at 20 North Park Street in Crescent City from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. the same day.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Bette Jean’s memory to the South Putnam Animal Network, 566 Clifton Road, Crescent City, FL 32112 or to the Useless Animal Farm, 7451 Crill Avenue, Palatka, FL 32177.
