Doris Blodgett

North Haverhill, N.H. — Doris Alta Choate Blodgett passed gently into the arms of the Lord, Thursday, May 4, 2017, at the Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill. She was 89. Doris was born in Woodsville, N.H. to Raymond and Glenna King Choate of Monroe on Aug. 3, 1927.

Doris was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Wayne Russell Blodgett. They made their life together in Littleton where they raised their four sons. She is survived by her sons and their wives: Jeffrey and Sandra of Franconia, Jonathan and Melinda of Lebanon, Mark and Penelope of Bethlehem and Daniel and Nikki of Concord. She is also survived by two of her brothers, Richard of North Haverhill and Carroll of Florida along with eight grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. She leaves behind many nieces, nephews, friends and family members.

She was also predeceased by her sisters, Anna Shufelt and Carolyn Stilling along with her brothers, David, Frank, Erwin and Emerson.

As a youngster, Doris grew up on the banks of the Connecticut River in Monroe, N.H. Some of her fondest memories include berry picking, playing the guitar with her musical siblings and sliding on the frozen river. She also was a member of McClure’s band during high school.

Upon graduation from Woodsville High School where she was the second highest in her class, she attended the University of N.H.

After marriage and having her family, Doris went to work at the White Mountain School (formerly St. Mary’s in the Mountains) for a few years. Then she went on to work at the Littleton Stamp and Coin Co for a couple of decades.

After retiring, she and Wayne spent many years delivering Meals on Wheels. As a couple they enjoyed camping, snowmobiling and spending time with family and friends. One of her proudest memories was being photographed with Michelle Obama at the Littleton Community Building.

Reading books and the Boston Globe, watching Patriots and Red Sox Games and keeping abreast of politics and world issues were her avocations. Doris never lost her love for music and reading which she passed onto her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Doris acquired a roommate after Wayne died in the form of a black and white kitty named, Cookie. The two were great company for each other for many years.

Crossword puzzles kept her mind active and made her an avid Scrabble player. Her love for words was passed on to her sons, all of whom are competitive Scrabble players. Her ability to solve difficult crossword puzzles was inherited by many of her grandchildren.

Doris will be dearly missed and fondly remembered. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Littleton Senior Center, 77 Riverglen Lane, PO Box 98, Littleton, NH 03561 or NHPR, c/o Elaine Loft, 2 Pillsbury St – 6th Floor, Concord, NH 03301.
