Facing a 6-6 tie, Hurd led off the stanza with a home run, then cranked a three-run triple nine at-bats later as the Hurricanes batted around, blowing open an eventual 19-9 win over the rival Yellowjackets.
Hurd finished 3-for-5 and pitched a complete game as Hartford bounced back from Tuesday’s opening-day loss at U-32.
Windsor fell to 0-7.
Kendyl Boisvert had four hits, four runs and three RBIs and Rachel Loseby had three hits and three runs for Hartford, which scored 11 runs in the fourth.
Hurd struck out seven, walked three and gave up 11 hits.
Brooke McKeen (4-for-4, run, RBI), Erin Wierzbicki (2-for-3, double, two runs) and Carah Rugg (2-for-4, two runs, two RBIs) stood out at the plate for Windsor, while sophomore Jasmine Frazer (two RBIs, two runs) legged out an impressive triple.
Hartford hits the road again on Saturday morning, visiting Fair Haven, while Windsor faces Thetford on the road on Saturday.

Mary Bourgeois struck out seven with one walk and five hits in game one for the O’s, helping her own cause at the plate by going 3-for-3 with five RBIs. Sara Walker was 2-for-4 with another five RBIs, and Maddie Fornwalt was 2-for-2 with four RBIs for Oxbow.
Fornwalt pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts and one walk in game two, while Britteny Brocar (2-for-3, run), Kaysea Neil (2-for-3, run) and Bourgeois (3-for-4, two runs, RBI) excelled at the plate.
Oxbow hosts Harwood on Tuesday.

Eighth-graders did much of the damage for the victors. Starting pitcher Fiona Vaillancourt struck out six with no walks and two hits through three innings, while going 2-for-3 at the plate with five runs scored.
Vaillancourt’s junior high classmate, Chelsea Trask, struck out five with no walks and two hits allowed over the final two innings. Vallaincourt went 2-for-3 with five runs at the plate.
Hayley Mears (5-for-6, two doubles, four runs, two RBIs) and Krista Townsend (3-for-4, three runs, two-run home run) added to the onslaught for Whitchester (3-0).
The Mountaineers visit South Royalton on Saturday.

Grace Pease had three hits, scored two runs and drove in four for South Royalton. Paige Ballentine had three hits, scored four runs and drove in two. Sophomore catcher Iris Hudson had a good day behind the plate, according to coach Roger McCrillis. Hudson also had two hits, walked twice and scored four runs.
SoRo (1-2) hosts Whitcomb-Rochester on Saturday.

Moretown, Vt.
Thetford took advantage of numerous walks by Harwood to score the bulk of their runs. Skye Currier was 2-for-2 with a three-run triple. Hollis had two hits and walked four times.
The Panthers (2-0) host Windsor at Rivendell high school at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Mansur went all seven innings and allowed just one hit. Katie Ferland led the Mascoma offense, going 2-for-5 with a home run. Morgan Prentiss was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
“We just played outstanding defense the entire day,” Mascoma coach Bill O’Connell said. “It feels great. The girls are finally coming together. The way last year went, they were trying to learn as they played. Now they can put that into action.”
Hanover starting pitcher Sam Gibbs struck out six. Kelley Finley singled and later scored on a passed ball for the Marauders in the second inning. Daria Gundermann and Bella Bardales also had singles.
The Royals (1-2) host Raymond on Friday. Hanover (0-6) hosts Stevens today.

Frederick (4-for-5, double, two runs) and Larpenter (2-for-3, two RBIs) also excelled at the plate, along with Elizabeth Frederick (3-for-5, double).

Alexis Ford and Sarah Ruest each had two-run doubles in the first inning. Marti Milan added a three-run triple. Jenna Pond led the overall Stevens attack with three hits.
Ruest went the first five innings in the circle, striking out four while walking two and allowing four hits. Maddy Lapsley went two innings in relief, striking out two.
Stevens visits Hanover today.

Kyle Weirether and Andy Seiple both went 1-for-3 with a run for Woodstock, Seiple adding an RBI.
Starting pitcher Hunter Balch gave up six hits, seven runs, three earned runs and four walks while striking out one for the Wasps in the loss.
Woodstock hosts Twin Valley on Saturday.

Hank Vincent (1-for-2, double, two runs), Will Austin (2-for-3, three RBIs) and Darren Hulton (2-for-4, two RBIs) stood out at the plate for Sunapee. Austin had the big hit, a two-run single with two outs in the fourth.
Nick Ducharme (3⅓ innings, two strikeouts, four walks), Gabe Hastings (2⅔ innings, one earned run, two walks) and Hulton (two innings) combined on the mound for Sunapee.
The Lakers are back on the road today, visiting Hinsdale.

Whitchester pitchers Isaac Hodgdon and Kevin Kingsbury both excelled at the plate, each going 2-for-3 with a triple.
Hodgdon struck out three and walked three in three innings, while Kingsbury finished up striking out two and walking none.
“We were a lot better than we were (in Tuesday’s lopsided loss at Williamstown),” Whitchester coach Chris Mattrick said. “I’m hoping we’ll continue to improve.”

Johnny Vogelien went 2-for-3 with a double and a run and Zach Gould and Colin Gould each went 1-for-3 with a run for Rivendell.
Dametres Perry gave up three earned runs in 2⅓ innings for the Raptors, who play the next of five games in seven days to start the season Saturday at Chelsea.

Bourque had a double, a triple and walked while scoring three runs and driving in a pair. Zach O’Brien was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Cody Schoolcraft had two hits. Brendan Bean had a single and a sacrifice fly to finish with two RBIs.
The score was knotted up at 5-5 through four innings. Derrick Stanhope capped a Stevens three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI single for what turned out to be the game-winning run.
Drew Grenier picked up the win with four strong innings of relief work. Grenier struck out three and walked none. Newfound had the game-tying run on second base with one out in the top of the seventh inning before Grenier induced a pair of groundouts to end the game.
Stevens (4-0) looks to keep rolling today when it hosts Franklin.

Thetford held on from there to improve to 2-0 on the young season. Ryan Pepe was 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Lawson Ouellette singled and walked twice.
Starting pitcher Seth Boyce went the first six innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out two and walking four. Alex Emerson pitched an inning of relief.
The Panthers (2-0) host Windsor on Saturday for their home opener.

Griffin walked just one and struck out two. Pembroke scored a run in the top of the first inning but was then stifled as Griffin settled into a groove.
Nate Gariepy singled in the first inning, stole second and then advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on Nate Perkins’ bunt single to knot the score at 1-1. Perkins picked up his second RBI when he drove in Kyle Pelletier on a sacrifice fly in the third inning.
The Raiders host Kingswood on Friday.

Windsor
Windsor junior Adam Stapleton made his second career start and shut out the Bulldogs through four innings. He finished with six innings pitched and allowed five runs, just one earned.
“Adam was pitching to contact and changing speeds; he gave us a chance to win the game,” Windsor coach Jamie Richardson said. “I was very pleased with his performance. We played really well through four.”
Windsor took the lead when Dakota Page walked and eventually scored on Stapleton’s RBI groundout in the second inning.

Jake Stimson added two hits and drove in one. Starting pitcher Lincoln Illsley pitched five innings, giving up 11 hits and five earned runs while striking out four.

Hartford (2-1) surrendered a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning before shutting down Brattleboro behind the pitching of Dylan Spencer and Jordy Allard. Spencer scattered seven hits over the first four innings, walking one and striking out one. Allard pitched two innings of no-hit relief with four strikeouts.
Austin Gaudette doubled in the second inning for the Canes, advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored on an RBI groundout for Nate Robinson.
“We saw (Bigelow) three times last year and beat him in the playoffs,” Hartford coach Jarrod Grassi said. “We’ve got some guys lacking a bit of experience. So it’s good for them to see Bigelow.”
Tyler Hamilton had two of the four Hartford hits. Hunter Perkins also singled.
Hanover 13, Salem 9

Reed Winter (two assists) and Kyle Rozzi added two goals each and Brian Seltzer had a goal and an assist for the Marauders.
Mason Winter made six saves for Hanover.

Freshman Ceci Spaulding scored her first career varsity goal for Hartford. Morgan Pero led the visitors with two goals. Michaela Ricker added a goal. Goalie Jaden Sanborn made 10 saves and had a strong game, according to coach Jen Wheatley.
Hanover 7, Bedford 2

Rine Uhm won 8-6 at No. 1 singles. Mindy Wu (8-0), Bri Laycock (8-0) and Ellen Lamm (8-2) also won to help Hanover to a 4-2 lead.
Uhm and Wu won won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Margaret Werner and Lamm added an 8-4 victory, and Laycock and Grace Li won 8-3.
“It was a great day for tennis and both teams played well,” Hanover coach Liz Murray said via email. “After a week and a half of no matches, it’s nice to be back on the court. We are looking forward to a fast paced rest of the season.”
Merchant Sweeps
Westminster, Vt.
Hartford’s Kennedy Mullen won the triple jump with a lunge of 33-0.25, while Thetford’s Grace Clement and Grace Davis shared the high jump win with jumps of 4-10.
On the boys side, Lebanon’s Ryan Sullivan won the long jump in 20-10.5, while Keith Illingworth, of Hartford, won a share of the high jump crown in 5-6.
