Lebanon — The Upper Valley stands to have significant representation at the 64th Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl this summer, with a dozen players from area schools scheduled to play after the announcement of game rosters on Tuesday.

Six players each from either side of the Connecticut River were chosen for their respective teams for the Shrine Game. The latest edition of the annual New Hampshire-Vermont high school football tilt is set for Aug. 5 at Castleton University’s Spartan Stadium at 5:30 p.m.

Vermont and Bellows Falls coach Bob Lockerby selected four players from Division I state champion Hartford in running back/defensive back Brett MacLaren and linemen Brian Moran, Bailey Nott and Khant Thu. They’ll be joined by receiver/defensive back Hunter Patenaude of Division III champion Windsor and running back/defensive back Dan Robinson from Woodstock.

Stevens High is contributing a pair of players from its NHIAA Division III state champion squad — running back Richard Bell and linebacker Zach O’Brien — to Granite State coach Rob Cathcart of Trinity High.

Newport linemen Tyler Hall and Jacob Merritt, Mascoma back Sheldon Farnsworth and Hanover lineman Will Chambers also were named to the New Hampshire roster.

Players will report to Castleton University for the start of workouts on July 30. Vermont won last year’s game, 50-2, to break a 15-year losing streak in the longtime series.

College Baseball

Dartmouth 19, Chicago 11

Lake Myrtle, Fla. — Dartmouth (7-4) scored eight times in the eighth inning to defeat the University of Chicago (5-3) on n at Lake Myrtle Park. Big Green senior Michael Ketchmark set career highs with five hits and six RBIs to lead his team’s 21-hit attack.

Of Ketchmark’s five hits, three were doubles and another was a solo home run as the captain racked up 11 total bases. Teammate Dustin Shirley was 4-for-5 with a double, two triples, four runs and three RBIs and Steffen Torgersen collected a career-high four hits ae scoring three times and driving in two more.

Patrick Peterson (1-2) was credited with the victory after pitching a scoreless eighth, and Christ Burkholder shut the door with a perfect ninth.

The Maroons, who racked up 16 hits of their own, were led by Connor Hickey, who was 4-for-6 with a double, three runs and two RBIs.

CSC’s Avellino Honored

New London — Colby-Sawyer College junior and Woodstock High graduate Doug Avellino is the North Atlantic Conference’s baseball player of the week.

Avellino had a strong second week of action for the Chargers, who won three of their seven games last week. The former multi-sport athlete with the Wasps hit .417, slugged .542 and had a .462 on-base percentage. A second baseman, Avellino hit safely in five games, had four multi-hit games and drove in eight runs for Colby-Sawyer.

The Chargers are slated to resume action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Lasell.

Men’s College Lacrosse

Navy 11, Dartmouth 6

Annapolis, Md. — Navy (3-6) handled Dartmouth (1-5) in a nonleague game to snap a three-game losing streak.

Ben Martin scored three times for Dartmouth, while teammate Richie Loftus had two goals and three assists. Big Green goalie George Christopher had seven saves.

After three weeks away from home, the Big Green will return to Scully-Fahey Field on Saturday to host Harvard in the Ivy League opener.

Men’s Tennis

Dartmouth 4, LSU 3

Baton Rouge, La. — Dartmouth (6-9) defeated LSU (5-11) for the first win of its spring break trip.

The doubles duos of Diego Pedraza/Roko Glasnovic and George Wall/David Horneffer were victorious, while Horneffer, Wall and Charlie Broom won in singles.

Two more spring break matches remain on the schedule before Dartmouth returns to Hanover.

On Thursday and Friday, the Big Green will face No. 20 Tulane and No. 28 South Alabama.
