Woodstock —
Organizers say volunteers are needed to fill positions on and off the snow throughout the weekend.
The competition opens with Unified Champion Schools snowshoeing, in which Special Olympics athletes and peers without intellectual disabilities compete together in relay-style snowshoe races.
The Opening Ceremony, set for March 3 on the town green, will open with the Parade of Athletes at 6:45 p.m., followed by a ceremonies program at 7 p.m. and fireworks on Mount Tom at 7:30 p.m. It will feature special guest Gov. Phil Scott, according to a news release from Special Olympics Vermont.
On Saturday and Sunday, more than 190 athletes will compete in alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. They represent all of Vermont’s 14 counties and range in age from 8 to 70 and older. For more information, or to volunteer, go to SpecialOlympicsVermont.org.
