Racing on a muddy course, Rhim — a member of the Furman University cycling team — recorded a time of 56 minutes, 26 seconds, for his second-place result. Only the University of Colorado’s Maxx Chance (55:05) did better. Cooper Willsey, of Hinesburg, Vt., and a Rhim teammate at Furman, was third (56:37).
Rhim also raced in Sunday’s U23 men’s pro final, taking 13th place (56:32) despite starting deep in the 56-rider field because of a lack of recent results. Lance Haidet, of San Luis Obispo, Calif., won in 52:58 after Chance dropped a chain in the final quarter-mile of a race over snow and frozen mud.
In his final year as a U23 competitor, Rhim is planning on taking his spring semester at Furman off in order to compete fulltime. The goal is to get attention from USA Cycling’s national program with early-season results.
