Lloyd’s shot crossed the goal line 12 minutes into the first half of Tuesday’s game against Blue Mountain, the first of three scored by Lloyd in the Phoenix’s 9-0 win over the Bucks. She became the 10th girls soccer player in Vermont high school history to reach 100 goals, earning the mark with busload of parents and fans in attendance to help her celebrate.
Fabrikant said the 100-goal mark was a tightly kept secret for most of the season.
“It was one of those things we were pretty superstitious about it,” he said. “We kept it under wraps, hadn’t made it known to the team. … We sort of had picked this one. We didn’t want to do it on senior day or take anything away from the rest of the seniors. We picked this one out. … This has been coming for a few months; it’s pretty surreal.”
Lloyd is not one who searches for the spotlight even as opposing Vermont Division IV defenses try to throw shade her way. On Tuesday, the Central Vermont League rivals stopped the match to recognize Lloyd’s accomplishment.
“It doesn’t get old,” Lloyd said of scoring goals. “It’s kind of, in the heat of the moment, something that needs to be done. That’s been drilled into my mind.”
Lloyd said that goal-scoring prowess started as a seventh-grader during Lightning Soccer Club play. She remembered starting off as a midfielder before her coaches, recognizing her speed, moved her into a prominent offensive role.
“It didn’t come super-naturally for me,” she said. “I have a pretty defensive mindset.”
It’s an unselfish mindset, too, according to Fabrikant. Lloyd added two assists in the victory. Eleanor Frost and Meghan Shirley netted two goals each. Grace Dorman also scored and Jocelyn Johnson, Sharon’s sweeper, scored her first varsity goal. Frost also had two assists.
Sharon (12-1) hosts South Royalton on Saturday.
