Sharon — After a lukewarm start to the season, the Whitcomb-Rochester boys soccer team is finally playing with more urgency. Opponents don’t appear to have an answer.

Zak Gillette scored twice and Ambrose Wigglesworth once in the Mountaineers’ 3-0 win at Central Vermont League rival Sharon Academy on Wednesday for Whitchester’s third straight win.

After a 3-3 start, the Mountaineers are 6-3 and have outscored their last three opponents an aggregate 15-1, including back-to-back shutouts.

“We’re playing with intensity and we’re aggressive beating teams to the ball,” Whitcomb-Rochester coach Corey Stearns said.

“(The Phoenix) outshot us 13-10 today, but it was our guys who had many more of the quality chances.”

Gillette fed Wigglesworth for the first goal in the 12th minute, then Gillette scored the next two unassisted, in the 27th and 46th.

It was the third game in five days for Sharon (7-3). “I think that fatigue was a factor,” Phoenix coach Rob Stainton said.

Isaac Hodgdon made 13 saves behind a strong Whitchester defense led by starting four Marcus Sheldon, Liam Walker, Gavin Turner and Damian Burbano-Young.

“Everybody contributed today,” Stearns said. “The starters and the subs.”
