Staff Report

Hanover – Fire departments from across the Upper Valley battled a four-alarm fire overnight at a Dartmouth College dormitory.

The fire was called in at 12:05 a.m., and Hanover firefighters used a ladder truck to get to the roof of Morton Hall on East Wheelock Street.

Smoke and flames could be seen shooting from the roof of the multi-story dormitory.

Seventy-one students live in the hall and were evacuated safely, a college spokeswoman told WMUR-TV.

No injuries were immediately reported and the fire was called under control at 4:52 a.m.

Firefighters from as far away as Claremont responded to the scene, authorities said.

Dartmouth issued a “campus community alert” on its website that read, in part, “at this time, there are no reported injuries and the fire is considered contained and extinguished. Please avoid this area so as not to interfere with emergency responders.”
