Woodstock — Deadlocked at halftime against a Vermont Division I foe, the D-II Woodstock girls soccer team saw things come unraveled after the break and lost a 6-2 decision to visiting Middlebury on Monday afternoon.

The loss drops the Wasps to 2-4.

Alexa Tsouknakis answered an early goal by the Tigers to knot the score at 1-1 with a header goal off a McKenzie Dalton corner kick. Middlebury answered back to take the lead before Tsouknakis again struck with a header off an Anna Dieffenbach corner to tie the score at 2-2 heading into halftime.

Isabel Rosenberg and Helen Anderson each had a pair of goals to help Middlebury dominate the second half.

Tsouknakis now has a team-high four points to lead Woodstock. Keeper Brittany Poljacik was busy to anchor the backline for the Wasps, who play host to Fair Haven on Saturday.

Lisbon 2, Woodsville 1

Lisbon, N.H. — The Engineers (1-5-1) couldn’t quite click all the puzzle pieces together in losing a tight battle at the Panthers.

Lisbon broke a scoreless deadlock with a goal off a corner in the 43rd minute. Suzie Bazzell answered three minutes later for Woodsville, converting with an assist to Dani Dube. The Panthers then scored again in the 57th minute and held on from there.

Sophomore goalie Jordan Sargent played a strong game according to coach Ann Loud, finishing with 12 saves.

“It’s tough because everyone had good moments,” Loud said. “The defense was working really well in the first half but the offense wasn’t able to do anything. Then the ‘D’ started struggling. We had moments of brilliance, it just never came together.”

The Engineers host Pittsburg-Canaan on Friday.

Cascarano Honored

Hanover — Dartmouth’s Brennan Cascarano earned Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance in the Big Green’s season-opening, 22-21 victory over 22nd-ranked New Hampshire on Saturday evening.

Cascarano, a junior, provided some of the biggest plays by the Dartmouth defense against the Wildcats. He pounced on a fumble early in the second quarter at the UNH 14 to give the Big Green a golden opportunity to pad their 7-0 lead. Cascarano then broke free early in the second half on the left side of the defensive line on a third-down play and dropped the Wildcat quarterback for a sack to force the visitors to punt.

But it was his final play of the game that sealed the victory after Dartmouth had rallied from 14 points down in the fourth quarter to take a 22-21 lead. New Hampshire faced a 4th-and-6 play with 34 seconds on the clock, needing only to maneuver into field goal range to have a chance to steal the game from the Big Green. Cascarano stepped up with another sack to thwart the drive and seal the one-point win, ending a 20-game winless streak against Dartmouth’s in-state rival spanning 40 years.

Cascarano finished the game with four tackles, two of which were the sacks, and his fumble recovery. The Big Green hit the road this Saturday when they travel to Holy Cross (1-2) to take on the Crusaders at Fitton Field at 1:05 p.m.
