Lancaster, Mass. — The 2007/U10 Boys Comets swept two games in a season opening jamboree in central Massachusetts on Sunday, shutting out Seacoast United Kings, 4-0, before a 5-2 decision over New England Football Club Elite White.

Dom Pentella, Thatcher Bacon, Oliver Choudhury, Nate Soleberg and Parker Mason shared scoring honors for the Comets, while goalies Ulysses Junker-Boyce and Zack Garfield performed well behind defenders Sam Ames, Thomas Bugg, Ian Surgenor, Roan Palm and Andrew Rudd.

The Comets return to Lancaster for two more games on Sept. 25.

Cyclones 0-1-1 vs SU

Epping, n.h. — The Lightning’s 2007/U10 Cyclones tied Seacoast United Blue, 2-2 before a 4-0 loss to SU Premier Mariners Blue on opening day Sunday.

Ryan Carroll and Gavin Munson scored for the Cyclones in the matinee, while goalie Wyatt Daigle made several impressive saves.

Munson, Jasper Moore, Safir Mehra, Abe Pearson and Burke Pekala led a strong defensive effort against Mariners Blue in game two.

Tornadoes Split

Epping, n.h. — LSC’s 2008/U9 Tornadoes fell 7-0 to Seacoast Express before a 6-2 win over Global Premier Soccer New Hampshire White.

The first game was delayed by rain and thunder. When play finally began, Seacoast jumped to an early lead and withstood pressure from the Tornadoes down the stretch.

GPS couldn’t stave off the Tornadoes the same way in game two, with conditions by then giving way to clear blue skies. LSC found its stride with strong passing and footwork.

GPS Navy 3, Flames 3

Meriden — Nolan Morlock’s goal with three minutes, 10 seconds remaining helped lift LSC’s 2006/U11 Flames to a 3-3 tie against Global Premier Soccer New Hampshire Navy at Kimball Union Academy’s Carver Field.

GPS led 2-0 at halftime before an own goal set up by the Flames’ Noah Branchflower made it 2-1.

Beckett Sobel tied it six minutes later after intercepting at GPS pass, but the visitors tied it in the 47th minute before Morlock’s winner.

Goalies Logan Isham (two saves) and Norwood Davis (seven) split time in net for the Flames.

SU Premier Blue 3, Fever 3

LSC’s U11 Fever rallied from an early deficit to forge a second-half lead before allowing the tying goal late against Seacoast United Premier Blue.

Cabot McLaren, Zach Tracy (penalty kick) and Zach Miles scored for the Fever, Miles’ strike putting the Fever ahead 3-2 in the middle of the second half.

Cayden VanDolah, Sean Smith, Charlie Forbush and Max McColgan led LSC’s defense in front of goaltender Henry Cotter.

GPS Select 4, Force 3

   A late goal by visiting Global Premier Soccer 2004 Select spoiled the season opener for the Lightning’s 2004/U13 Force Unit.

Trailing 1-0 early, Matthias Einarsson scored the Force’s first goal of the year to tie it before halftime.

LSC went ahead 3-1 on goals by Luke Ives and Connor Hamlin, but GPS rallied with goals on a penalty kick from the edge of the box and another from far distance before the winner.

Team Aztec 4, Cosmos 1

Saugus, Mass. — LSC’s 2003/U14 Cosmos fell to Team Aztec in their season opener.

Garret Stever scored the lone goal for the Cosmos, redirecting a feed from Pierce Hamlin.

Gabe Jacobs, Jax Lussier and Henry Aspinwall all had strong games for the U14s, as did goalie Ian O’Brien.

Girls SoccerPelham 5, Stars 4

Norwich — The 2006/U11 Stars nearly came back from a 4-1 deficit against the Pelham 2006 Redhawks in the season opener Saturday.

Sydney McLaughlin had two goals and an assist for the Stars, while Katie Pierson had a goal and and two assists and McKenzie Nostrant scored once.

Braelyn Park played a strong game in net for LSC.

Sparks 3, Admirals 0

Amesbury, Mass. — Mary Rainey scored twice as LSC’s 2005/U12 Sparks earned a road shutout win in their season opener.

Both of Rainey’s goals came in the first half before Casey Havrda assisted Ashley Cotter for another Sparks strike in the second.

LSC 2005/U12 hosts Seacoast United USA White at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Carver Field in Meriden.

Hooksett 4, Chargers 0

Hooksett, n.h. — High pressure from host Hooksett got the better of LSC’s 2002/U15 Chargers in the season opener last weekend.

Emma Berard led a strong defensive effort in front of goalie Sally Rainey, while Charlotte Johnson helped generate some offensive opportunitiies for the Charges in the second half.

On the PitchUpper Valley 65, Rutland 0

Lebanon — The Upper Valley Mountain Men improved to 2-0 with a decisive win over the Rutland Roosters (1-1) in a New England Rugby Football Union League match on Saturday.

Darius Long scored five times for Upper Valley, while Cody Patch and Zac Conaway scored a pair of tries each.

Alex Corindia and Kevin Shaw added tries while Davis Peck and scrum half Matt Tannozzini also played strong games for the Mountain Men.

Upper Valley heads to Keene, N.H., this Saturday to take on the Monadnock Wolfpack, also 2-0.

In the BuildingHartford Rec FacilityOpen House

White River Junction — The Hartford School District is inviting the public to an open house for its new recreation facility on Sept. 22.

The building is located adjacent to the Sherman Manning Pool behind Hartford High School. It includes exercise equipment for use by the students both at the high school and the nearby Hartford Memorial Middle School.

The fitness center has large spaces devoted to training, strength and conditioning along with injury prevention and rehab. Equipment includes cardio, cables, free weights and racks. It also has roll-up doors that can be maneuvered to create multiple locker room space depending upon needs at the time of use.

The open house is scheduled for 6:30-8 p.m.

On the RunRun for Kehoe 5K

West Canaan — Mascoma Valley Parks and Recreation will hit the road for the 5K Run for Kehoe on Sunday.

The 5K road race and associated 3K walk will take place at Mascoma Valley Regional High School, starting at 10 a.m. The event is held in memory of Ed Kehoe, the former Mascoma High teacher and coach who died after a battle with brain cancer two years ago.

Proceeds from the event go toward a pair of causes. One is the Ed Kehoe Scholarship, which will reward a graduating Mascoma High senior who is going into an education- or athletics-related field in college. The other is the Kehoe Children Educational Fund.

Advance registration is available via a link to Mascoma Valley Parks and Recreation’s Facebook page. The cost of the race is $20, with a Sept. 13 deadline for the run and Sept. 14 for the walk. The cost increases from there to $25 through race day. Event T-shirts are also available for $10 each.

Rivendell Ramble Coming

Orford — Runners and hikers are invited to join the 12th edition of the Rivendell Ramble on Sept. 24 on the Cross Rivendell Trail.

The event operates on donations to the Rivendell Trail Association. The suggested fee is $15 for adults to participate in either a 5K or 10K trail run or 3.6-mile hike planned for the day. The event begins and ends at Rivendell Academy, with shuttle bus service to the race and hike starting locations. A free lunch from area restaurants is also provided to all participants.

Lucy Mac 5K Moving

Brownsville — The Lucy Mac 5K-9 run and walk will take place on Oct. 2 at the Ascutney Trails facility on Mount Ascutney in Brownsville.

A fundraiser for the Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society, the event will take place on trails laid out on Ascutney’s western base. Trail shoes are recommended for anyone participating, as parts of the course will run over rocks, wood, dirt and grass. The 5K trail run is open to all; a one-mile fun run or walk is also planned, and a special kids mini-course will be set up with a series of dog agility-inspired obstacles.

Participants are also welcome to join with or without dogs.

On the TeeNordic Combined Tourney

Grantham — New England Ski Jumping Nordic Combined has set Sept. 22 as the date of its first fundraising golf tournament at Eastman Golf Links.

The tournament hopes to raise money that will help design, implement, staff and sustain programs that provide youth ski jumpers from the region programs to either start or extend their participation in both jumping and Nordic combined. Proceeds from the tournament will also help with funding compensation and travel expenses for NESJNC’s head coach for summer and winter competitions.

The golf tournament is set for a 1 p.m. shotgun start at Eastman (11 a.m. registration). The cost to participate is $200 per person or $600 for a foursome, which includes golf carts, range balls, NESJNC hats and a post-tournament barbecue and awards ceremony.
