Cabot, Vt. — Brais Figeuroa scored with 34 seconds remaining in the second half and assisted on Connor Lambert’s winning goal five minutes into overtime Wednesday, lifting the South Royalton boys soccer team to an improbable, comeback victory.

“They didn’t give up and kept fighting to the very, very end,” said Royals coach Alex Montano, whose team prevailed, 2-1. “To get the reward is nice; they deserve it.”

South Royalton lost its first two games and was staring at another setback, this time by shutout. But Dalton McDougall’s back pass to Figueroa led to a 1-1 tie, and Lambert, a junior forward, scored from the top of the penalty area to end the contest.

“After losing our first (game) in OT, it would have been disappointing to lose this,” Montano said. “Cabot played very good defense and was very composed.”

Montano said defenders Sam Fisk and George Carr, a freshman making his first varsity start, each had strong games. Goalkeepers Jayson Perron and McDougall combined for nine saves. The Royals outshot Cabot, 17-10, and host Blue Mountain on Saturday.
