Eugene, Ore.
Just shy of three weeks removed from a third-place finish and All-America first team recognition at the same venue during the NCAA Outdoor Championship, Whitehorn cleared 6 feet, 0.5 inches/1.84 meters on her second attempt to place sixth through the first day of competition.
Whitehorn and the other 11 competitors who advanced to the final will compete at 6:15 p.m. Sunday with the hopes of punching their ticket to Rio and the Summer Olympic Games.
Also competing on Friday night was 2014 graduate Megan Krumpoch in the preliminaries of the 800 meters. Krumpoch — who also earned First-Team All-America at Hayward as a senior in 2014 — was sixth in her heat with a 2:05.35, missing out on a chance to move on to the semifinals.
Two other Dartmouth alumni did not advance to Rio. Former gold medalist Adam Nelson (class of 1997) was seventh in the shot put and Ben True (2008) was 11th in the 10,000-meter final.
Nelson, the 2004 gold medalist in the event, threw 66-2.25/20.17 meters on his first attempt of the final, but he fouled on the next five throws.
In the 10,000, True, running for Team Saucony, crossed in 29:04.21.
True still has a shot at Rio as he runs in the preliminaries of the 5,000 meters on Monday. The final is July 9.
