White River Junction — A 26-year-old North Springfield woman who helped a murder suspect evade capture in April 2015 pleaded guilty to obstructing justice earlier this month.

Wendy Morris will report to Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington on Friday to begin serving a nine-month sentence.

According to a police affidavit, Morris helped Gregory A. Smith, her “on-and-off” boyfriend, hide after a warrant for his arrest was issued in connection with the 2015 shooting death of Wesley Wing in Springfield.

Smith eluded police for five days following the April 18 shooting.

Police conducted several interviews with Morris following Wing’s death about her knowledge of the shooting and Smith’s whereabouts.

She told police she would alert them if she knew where Smith was and told police she understood that lying could result in criminal charges, the affidavit states.

On April 23, police located Smith and Morris at her brother’s camp in Londonderry, Vt.

Prosecutors initially charged Morris with accessory after the fact, a felony offense punishable by up to seven years in prison.

As part of a plea agreement she accepted on June 7, Morris pleaded guilty to obstructing justice, which is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Windsor Superior Court Judge Theresa DiMauro sentenced her to nine months in jail and ordered Morris to report to Chittenden Regional on July 1.

Smith is charged with second-degree murder and pleaded not guilty in April 2015. He is being held without bail at Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, Vt., and appeared on Tuesday in Windsor Superior Court for a motion hearing.

Police allege Wing, a father of four, got into a verbal altercation with Morris about her alleged use of drugs near his Springfield home. Police allege Morris subsequently told Smith about the altercation, which prompted Smith to speak with Wing.

Gunshots rang out shortly after, according to police.

Prosecutor Ultan Doyle on Tuesday sought to add several no-contact provisions to Smith’s conditions, including a condition to prohibit Morris and Smith from speaking pending trial.

Smith’s attorney, Jordana Levine, objected to Doyle’s request.

DiMauro sided with the state and said in court there is “no reason” for Smith to have contact with Morris.

Morris is likely a state witness if Smith’s case proceeds to trial, DiMauro said.

Smith’s next court hearing is scheduled for Nov. 15.
