West Canaan — The Mascoma High baseball team went into Friday’s senior day season finale knowing it wasn’t heading to next week’s NHIAA Division III state tournament. But that didn’t mean the Royals weren’t going to have some fun.

And what’s more fun than a win in the bottom of the seventh inning?

Ty Warner slapped a two-out, run-scoring single in the Royals’ final at-bat of the season as Mascoma won a seesaw 8-7 victory over White Mountains at Mascoma Valley Regional High School. Down by a run after 6½ innings, the Royals (5-11) used two hits, two Spartan errors and a passed ball to produce the tying and winning runs.

Mascoma also can say it closed with a quality win, its first against a team with a winning record this spring. The Royals’ other victories came in season sweeps of Newport (4-12) and Newfound (1-15).

“It’s a great way to finish the season,” Mascoma coach Guy Serviss said. “It showed the kids coming back what they need to do on a daily basis. We were loose; we were talking; we had that feeling. It took all year to get this feeling.”

The Royals answered a three-run White Mountains fifth with one of their own for a 5-4 lead. Wyatt Wheeler, Ethan Brueckner and Dylan Mulherin all delivered run-scoring singles for the home team.

The Spartans plated two in the sixth, only to have the Royals answer to tie the contest at 6-6. Warner did the work, reaching base on a hit, moving to third on a ground-ball error and scoring on a ground out.

White Mountains tabbed Mulherin, the last of three Mascoma pitchers, for a run in the top of the seventh, setting the stage for one last Royal rally. Oscar Brueckner doubles, Ethan Brueckner reached on an error and a miscue on a Will Morrison grounder brought in Oscar Brueckner with the tying run. Ethan Brueckner eventually moved to third on a passed ball, and Warner’s two-out single brought him home.

Seniors Oscar Brueckner, Morrison and Mulherin handled the pitching, with Mulherin working the seventh for the victory. Anthony Sperry and Jordan Deford also played their final games in Mascoma colors.
