Arlington, Texas — Josh Hamilton will have another surgery on his left knee and not play a game this season for the Texas Rangers.

The 2010 AL MVP and five-time All-Star slugger has already had surgery twice on his left knee the last nine months, along with cortisone shots and even a stem cell and platelet-rich plasma injection during spring training. He played in one game for Double-A Frisco on April 30 before being recalled from his rehab assignment.

Hamilton, on the disabled list all season, got another opinion from Dr. Walt Lowe in Houston. The knee specialist is scheduled to perform another surgery June 8.

General manager Jon Daniels said Monday that the season-ending surgery will be different than the previous procedures.

“Physically, he can’t play,” Daniels said. “He’s frustrated.”

The news about Hamilton came on the same day the Rangers put outfielders Shin-Soo Choo (strained left hamstring) and Drew Stubbs (sprained left little toe) on the 15-day disabled list. Choo was back on the disabled list after playing only one game Friday in his return from a previous DL stint, while Stubbs got hurt running the bases Sunday.

Royals’ Gordon on DL

Minneapolis — The Kansas City Royals have placed All-Star outfielder Alex Gordon on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right wrist.

The Royals announced the move on Monday before opening a series in Minnesota against the Twins.

Manager Ned Yost says Gordon will not need surgery but will miss three to four weeks. Gordon was injured in a loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday when he collided with third baseman Mike Moustakas.

Moustakas is listed as day to day with a bruised knee.

Zimmermann to Miss Start

Detroit — Jordan Zimmermann is expected to miss at least one start for Detroit, but Tigers manager Brad Ausmus says he’s more optimistic now than he was Sunday, when the right-hander left his start in the sixth inning with a right groin strain.

Ausmus said Monday that Zimmermann has a Grade 1 strain, which is the lowest level. He said it would be a stretch for Zimmermann to make his next start Friday, but it’s not clear yet if he’ll have to miss any extra turns in the rotation.

Detroit has an off day Thursday, so the Tigers can skip Zimmermann’s next turn without needing to add anybody to the rotation.

Miguel Cabrera, who left Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay with a bruised left knee, is in the lineup Monday night against Philadelphia.
