Hanover — Dartmouth College’s Thayer School of Engineering today said it has received a $25 million gift from an alumnus to go toward a planned expansion of the program.

Dartmouth said $15 million from Barry MacLean, a longtime member of Thayer’s Board of Overseers, will help pay for a 180,000-square-foot building on the Dartmouth campus to nearly double Thayer’s total floor space.

MacLean’s gift also includes $10 million in a challenge grant to create endowed professorships at Thayer.

MacLean runs Illinois based MacLean-Fogg, a manufacturing company that employs 4,500 people across 35 locations around the world, Dartmouth said in a news release.
