Allan Munck
Allan Munck

Hanover, N.H. — Allan Ulf Munck died, unexpectedly, in his home on Friday, April 29, 2016. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, July 4, 1925, to Danish parents. After completing his military service and one year of study in Argentina, Allan had the good fortune to sail to the United States and attend MIT for his BS, MSC and Phd in Biophysics. At MIT, he was able to pursue his passion for scientific research and met many colleagues that he corresponded with for life. He also was a founding member of the MIT Rugby team. Nearing the end of his student days, he met the “love of his life”, Claire Brosi, and they were married in 1957.

The Muncks initially moved to Worcester, Mass. for a postdoctoral fellowship and Allan was then offered a professorship at Dartmouth College. Allan and Claire had three children and resided contentedly in Norwich, Vt. for 49 years, followed by Kendal at Hanover for the last eight years. Allan was a much admired professor of physiology at Dartmouth Medical School from 1959 to 2000. He remained a vibrant member of the Giesel Medical School emeritus staff until the day he died.

Allan was a true educator, curious intellectual and connoisseur of classical music. In his retirement, he was finally able to practice his cello daily and play twice weekly in chamber groups. He also regularly volunteered at the Montshire Museum ant exhibit. Allan thoroughly enjoyed teaching children as much as medical students. His most pressing intellectual interest in retirement, however, was to understand and resolve Einstein’s theory of relativity. He was rarely seen without his 50 cent copy of Einstein’s “Therory of Relativity” and his calculation notebook in hand. Allan fully enjoyed jogging, biking and hiking in the Upper Valley and wherever his extensive travels took him.

Allan is survived by his wife, Claire; his children, Ingrid and Kirsten; and his grandchildren, Gemma, Nico and Lida; as well as many friends, colleagues and fellow musicians.

A Celebration of Life service is being planned for the summer of 2016.
