Rochester, Vt. — For the Whitcomb-Rochester baseball team, the rally was too little and it came too late.

The Mountaineers scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning before leaving the game-winning runs stranded on the bases, falling 12-11 to South Royalton on Thursday at the Rochester School.

“We got up early, and they got us in the middle of the game,” Whitchester head coach Chris Mattrick said.

Whitchester’s Matt Townsend pitched for 2 innings with three strikeouts, four hits and four runs. Zak Gillette took the loss in relief over 2 innings, also amassing three strikeouts along with one walk and four runs. Daniel Labejsza was 3-for-4 with seven RBIs for Whitchester, and Gillette added three hits and three stolen bases.

The Mountaineers (1-3) host Chelsea on Saturday in an 11 a.m. doubleheader.

Hartford 10, Windsor 1

White River Junction — Codi Smith struck out seven Windsor batters as the Hurricanes rolled to their first win of the year.

Dylan Spencer was 3-for-3 and scored two runs. Nate Walz added two hits and two RBIs, and Jordy Allard added a hit and three runs scored. Hartford only accumulated five hits, but took advantage of 11 walks.

Stevens 11, Newfound 1

Bristol, n.h. — Login Barry made the most of his first varsity start on the mound, going seven innings with five walks, three hits, 11 strikeouts and one earned run for the Cardinals (1-1).

“It was our second game. We made some mistakes, but I’m glad we bounced back,” Stevens coach Paul Silva said. “We’re a young group, there are going to be some growing pains, but Login was fantastic.”

Barry also had a hit, a run and an RBI in the victory. Noah Spaulding had a hit and two runs, Coby Hussey had a hit, a run and an RBI, and Derrick Stanhope had two RBIs. Drew Grenier added a pair of hits, a run and an RBI as well.

Sunapee 20Moultonborough 7 (5)

Sunapee — Cole Cruz finished with two hits, two runs and four RBIs for the Lakers.

Ben Robinson and Will Austin split time on the mound and combined for seven strikeouts. Mike Platt had two hits, three runs and three RBIs and Hank Vincent had two runs, three RBIs and three runs in the victory.

Sunapee (3-1) will travel to Pittsfield next Wednesday.

Sanborn 5, Lebanon 3

Lebanon — Lebanon’s Derrick Griffin pitched six innings with three strikeouts, four walks, three hits and five runs as the Raiders continue to look for their first win of the season.

“We need to get better defensively if we want to win some games,” Lebanon head coach Doug Ashey said.

Lebanon made seven errors in the game against five hits. The Raiders (0-3) will host Hanover today.

SoftballSunapee 2Moultonborough 1 (9)

Sunapee — Hannah Cooney broke a stalemate in the bottom of the ninth when she scored on a single from Lexie Hamilton to keep the Lakers perfect through four games.

Sunapee’s Katie Frederick pitched a duel with Moultonborough’s Maddie Greene, combining for 34 strikeouts between them. Faith Larpenter scored a home run in the second inning to give Sunapee the early 1-0 lead before Moultonborough tied it in the fifth. Frederick pitched 20 strikeouts in nine innings.

“She was in control the entire game,” Sunapee head coach Bonnie Cruz said. “She wanted to be out there.”

Sunapee (4-0) accumulated only three hits.

Hartford 9, Woodstock 6

Woodstock — Maddie Moore threw six strikeouts, but the Wasps couldn’t recover after the Hurricanes scored four runs in the first inning.

Hartford accumulated seven hits, including a home run by Kylee Beaucage. Emily Ballou and Elizabeth Greenan each had two hits. Brooke Hurd threw nine strikeouts in the victory.

Woodstock’s Gabbi Rozumek, Hannah Reali and Loretta Blakeney each had a hit in the game. The Wasps (1-1) will host Proctor on Saturday.

South Royalton 7Whitcomb-Rochester 5

Rochester, Vt. — Shannon Ludwig had two hits, including a triple, and scored twice as the Royals beat Whitchester at the Rochester School.

Laura Vaillancourt was in the circle for the Mountaineers, pitching all seven innings with 10 strikeouts and seven walks. The Royals scored one run in the first inning, three in the fifth and three more in the sixth to win.

Rachel Moore had a triple, two singles, five RBIs and two runs for the Royals.

Whitchester (1-1) will host Bellows Falls on Saturday. South Royalton (1-3), with its first win, will take on Rivendell on the road on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Thetford 14, Windsor 12

Windsor — The Yellowjackets scored six runs in the sixth, but left the bases loaded with a ground out to the pitcher to cut the comeback short.

Only five of the runs Windsor pitcher Becca Rumrill allowed were earned as the Panthers capitalized on 15 hits and seven walks. Thetford’s Taylor Hollis went 6 innings for the win, giving up four hits and 10 walks with seven strikeouts.

Emily Williams had two hits, two runs and two RBIs for Windsor in the loss.

“The girls fought right to the end,” Windsor head coach Phil Hathorn said.

The Yellowjackets (0-3) will travel to Hartford on Saturday.

Newfound 10, Stevens 5

Bristol, n.h. — Stevens dropped its second game in a row, falling to Newfound. The Cardinals (0-2) will travel to Kearsarge on Monday.

White River Junction — Dani Nguyen lost, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles as the Hurricanes were swept in their second straight match.

Hartford (0-2) will host Mount Anthony today.

College BaseballSouthern Vermont 13 Colby-Sawyer 6

New London — Colby-Sawyer dropped a decision to Southern Vermont in a nonconference home game.

The Mountaineers (18-14) began the game with three runs on RBI singles from RJ Pingitore and John Arancio and a run scoring force out from Austin Teitelbaum.

Colby-Sawyer (10-17) got a run back in its first at-bat on a sac fly from Brady Dion and added another run in the second on another sac fly from Austin Butler.

Women’s LacrosseColby-Sawyer 17 Southern Vermont 4

Bennington, Vt. — The Chargers won their fourth straight game, taking a nonconference contest at Everett Field.

The Chargers (10-6) put up the first seven goals of the day and shut out their hosts in the second half. Senior Caitlyn Whearty tallied a game-high four goals and moved into a tie for sixth plate in career goals with 124.

Classmate Sara Berry registered a pair of scores, an assist and a game-best five ground balls in the win.

Colby-Sawyer visits Maine-Farmington in its regular-season finale on Saturday.
