Newport — Stephanie Carl and Katrina Batista each had three RBIs to lead the Newport High softball team in a 19-3 defeat of visiting Mascoma in five innings on Monday afternoon at Newport Middle High School.

Carl also started in the circle, pitching the first four innings with five strikeouts while allowing no runs and one hit. Kendall Hamilton pitched an inning in relief.

Batista also scored three runs for the Tigers in their season debut. Emma Carroll drove in two runs and scored four. Brooke Beaulieu and Gabby Scanlon each had two RBIs and two runs of scored. Stacia Dame drove in one and scored. Hamilton added two RBIs and two runs. Hannah Clark chipped in one RBI and two runs scored, and Barbara Perry scored twice for the Tigers.

Rayleigh Mansur went all five innings for Mascoma, walking just two and striking out three. Katie Ferland and Mikayla Clifford had hits for the Royals; Clifford had one RBI.

Newport (1-0) hosts Fall Mountain on Monday. Mascoma (0-4) visits the Wildcats on Friday.

Sunapee 15, Epping 7

Epping, n.h. — Katie Frederick capped a Laker comeback with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning.

Frederick finished 4-for-5 and also had a triple. Faith Larpenter slugged a two-run home run in the first inning, but Epping answered with five runs to hold a 5-2 lead heading into the third. Sunapee chipped away from there and pulled away with six runs in the top of the seventh to get the win.

Hannah Cooney started for Sunapee and pitched the first two innings. Frederick pitched the last five innings. Meg Frederick had a hit and four runs scored.

Sunapee hosts Moultonborough on Thursday afternoon.

Moultonborough 6Woodsville 2

Moultonborough, n.h. — Alyssa Prest pitched six innings, surrendering five earned runs and struck out six, but the Engineers fell to the Panthers.

Dee Martin and Mariah Corliss scored for Woodsville. The Engineers had some good scoring chances but couldn’t get the clutch hit when necessary to chip away at the Moultonborough lead.

Woodsville (2-2) hosts Groveton on Monday.

Hollis-Brookline 16Lebanon 2

Lebanon — The Raiders are now 0-2 and look ahead to hosting Hanover on Friday afternoon.

Baseball Sunapee 16, Epping 0 (5)

Epping, n.h. — Cole Cruz could do no wrong, tossing a five-inning no-hitter and going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Lakers.

Cruz struck out 10 in a dominant performance on the mound. He added an RBI and scored four runs to help his own cause.

“It’s a nice way for (Cruz) to start as a senior, throwing a no-no. It’s a great day for him and a good day all around. It was nice to see the bats come out and again we played really good defense,” Sunapee coach Tom Frederick said.

Ben Robinson was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs to pace the Lakers’ attack. Keir Lucas added two hits and also drove in four. Mike Platt had two hits and three runs scored. Freshman Lane Smith doubled and drove in two.

The Lakers (2-1) host Moultonborough on Thursday.

Moultonborough 8Woodsville 3

Moultonborough, n.h. — The Engineers were stifled by the Panthers’ pitching and dropped to 2-2 with the loss.

Seth Hannett pitched 4⅓ innings for Woodsville, striking out four. Mike Dennis, Jaret Bemis and Travis Stoddard scored for the Engineers, who finished with just five hits.

“We put the ball in play, but a lot of balls went right at them,” Woodsville coach Brent Cox said. “We’ve done well against faster pitching the previous two games. They slowed it down on us. (We’re hitting) the end of the bat, dribblers, easy plays for them to make.”

Woodsville hosts Groveton on Monday.

Hollis-Brookline 11Lebanon 0 (5)

Lebanon — The Raiders committed seven errors in a tough loss against the visiting Cavaliers.

Starting pitcher Nate Perkins took the loss. Joah Moss had his first varsity hit. The Raiders had just three hits; the others by Nate Gariepy and Hunter Boutin. Moss and Alex Bitler also saw work on the mound in relief.

Lebanon hosts Hanover on Friday.

Boys Lacrosse Trinity 12, Stevens 1

Claremont — The Cardinals dropped a tough matchup with Trinity, falling to 1-2 on the young season.

Chris LaFont scored for Stevens. Goalie Scott Foisy had 19 saves as Trinity held a big advantage in shots on goal. The Cardinals host Monadnock on Friday.

Kearsarge 15, Lebanon 2

North Sutton, n.h. — The Raiders dropped their season opener as the Cougars scored early and often.

Michael Fleury had a goal and an assist for Lebanon. Jordan Hammond added a goal. Gareth Davis (five saves) and Bryan Albright (three saves) split time in goal for the Raiders.

“We had a rough showing in our first game. We look forward to developing our offense,” Lebanon coach Lochrane Gary said.

The Raiders (0-1) visit Coe-Brown on Friday.

Girls Lacrosse Hanover 12, John Stark 10

Hanover — The Marauders overcame a sterling effort by the John Stark defense to pick up their third straight victory to start the season.

Hanover outshot the Generals 32-12 but was stifled for long stretches by the Stark goalie.

Molly Seibel led the Marauders attack, factoring in all but one goal as she finished with seven scores and four assists. Johanna Copeland added three goals and one assist. Maddie Lyons and Amelia Lubrano each had a goal and one assist. Perrin Milliken added a single assist.

“It was a hard-fought game; it wasn’t as if we were shooting poorly. Their goalie just made a lot of nice saves. We did an outstanding job hustling and our defense was really strong,” Hanover coach Chris Seibel said.

The Marauders (3-0) face a tough test today when Laconia comes to town.

Boys Tennis Woodstock 4Mount Anthony 3

Bennington, Vt. — A pair of sophomores playing their first varsity matches earned the deciding point to give the Wasps a season-opening victory.

Tied at three victories each, the No. 2 doubles pairing of sophomore newcomers Ethan Earle and Brendan Schwartz won, 7-6, 7-5, to clinch the final point and send Woodstock home happy.

Ray Kurek (6-1, 6-3) and Bryan Kopf (7-6, 5-7, 12-10) won in singles. Justin Kopf and Kyle Rasmussen swept the No. 1 doubles match, winning 6-1, 6-0. The Wasps play host to Bellows Falls on Friday afternoon.

Hanover 7Manchester Central 2

Hanover — The Marauders won five of six singles matches and improved to 4-1.

Hanover’s Graham Dickson lost a tough matchup at No. 1 singles to hard-serving Howard Sevey, 8-6. Benny Gantrish (8-3), John He (9-7), Aidan Biglow (8-0), Will Bonner (8-4) and Jasper Meyer (8-6) grabbed singles victories for the Marauders. Dickson and Gantrish then won, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Bonner and Meyer added an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.

The Marauders are off until visiting Keene on May 2.

Lebanon 9, Bishop Brady 0

Concord — The Raiders (1-0) showed they still have plenty of talent left from last year’s state finalists, shutting out the Green Giants in their season opener.

Terran Campbell (8-3), Jacob Peress (8-2), Noah Didehbani (8-3), Owen Johnstone (8-2), Ben Ask (8-1) and Noah Ryder (8-5) swept singles to clinch the win early for Lebanon. The tandems of Campbell-Peress and Johnstone-Ask added doubles wins, with Didehbani linking up with Lasse Bisp at No. 3 doubles for the Raiders’ final point.

“It was a good win for the team with Max Reed’s graduation last year,” said coach Michael Haxton, referring to Lebanon’s ace from 2015, now playing squash at Penn. “This year, we cannot count on two points that Max always got for us.”

The Raiders open their home schedule at the CCBA on Wednesday against Goffstown.

Rutland 6, Hartford 1

Rutland — The Hurricanes dropped their season opener to the Raiders.

Spencer Rugg won at No. 4 singles for Hartford, 6-2, 6-4. The Canes have a busy slate ahead as they host Bellows Falls on Wednesday, St. Johnsbury on Thursday and Mount Anthony on Friday.

Women’s Lacrosse Albany 9, Dartmouth 7

Hanover — The Big Green (6-7) lost at Scully-Fahey Field for the first time this season, falling to the Great Danes.

Senior Jaclyn Leto had five goals for Dartmouth to give her 145 for her career, good for fifth all-time in program history. Leto now has 47 goals this season. Kathryn Giroux and Kierra Sweeney also scored for Dartmouth.

Down by one at halftime, Leto and the Big Green started fast with three quick goals to hold a 6-5 lead. Albany rallied for four consecutive goals to take a lead they would they not relinquish.

The Big Green visit Brown on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Colby-Sawyer 19Johnson State 4

New London — Eight different players scored as the Chargers (8-6 overall, 6-1 league) rolled to an easy North Atlantic Conference win.

Nicole Lavigne scored the game’s first two goals for Colby-Sawyer, and the hosts never looked back. Lavigne finished with a game-high six goals and four assists. Caitlyn Whearty netted a hat trick.

The Chargers continue a stretch five games in seven days when they host Rivier on Wednesday.
